When we were last together, the Philistines were gathering in the Valley of Elah at the Ephes-dammim, the boundary of blood. And they were preparing to go to war; however, one thing stopped them from invading the land of Israel: the legend of Israel’s God, Yahweh.
They send out their champion Goliath, and he cursed the name of Yahweh for 40 days testing the ground to see if Yahweh was present. But while the Philistines were afraid of Yahweh, King Saul and his army were afraid of the Philistines. King Saul, the supposed champion of Israel and Goliath’s equal, did not silence this champion from Gath for cursing the one true God, instead he was hiding in his tent.
But Yahweh was on that battlefield and he would not allow those curses to go unanswered or unpunished. Yahweh’s true champion was making his way to the battlefield…And this challenge by Goliath introduces the opportunity for Yahweh to be glorified and David to rise as the new champion and future king of Israel…

Welcome back to the Kavod Podcast!
It has been about a year since I dropped the last episode and put the podcast on hiatus. A few things have happened since that time which have kept me from recording an episode. Last year, I became a dad with the birth of my son, Benaiah, named after one of David’s mighty men. Then at the beginning of this year I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, went through treatment, had surgery and I am now cancer free. More recently, I started pastoring a reformed baptist church here in Biloxi, Mississippi. So, along with starting up the podcast again I will also be uploading my weekly sermons to the Kavod podcast. Currently, we are going through the book of Titus. Today’s sermon looks at the writer of Titus, Paul once a persecutor and now a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ.

In this podcast, we will look at the mighty men of scripture and see how they lived lives not for their own glory, but to the Kavod of Yahweh. The glory of the God of Israel. We have been looking at the greatest of the Old Testament warriors, King David and his rise to power in 1st Samuel. Saul has been rejected by God, and David has been anointed the new king. In 1 Samuel 16, verse 13 and 14, we see a spiritual transition of power. In verse 13, as the oil is running down David’s face it says that the Spirit of Yahweh rushed upon him and was with him from that day forward. Then in verse 14, we are told that the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul. So while the spiritual transition of leadership has already happened, the physical transfer of power and kingship plays out through the remaining 16 chapters of 1 Samuel.
We will see Saul become more and more cowardly, as David displays why he is described as a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, a man of good presence, and Yahweh is with him. And the first step in this transition of power happened when Saul called David to court to be his personal musician, but David quickly rose to a more prominent position as Saul’s armor bearer.
While all of this is going on, Israel’s sworn enemy, the Philistines, are preparing for a war against Israel, which is where our story begins today in 1 Samuel 17, verses 1 through 11.
In this podcast, we will look at the mighty men of scripture and see how they lived lives not for their own glory, but to the Kavod of Yahweh. The glory of the God of Israel. We have finally made our way to the life of David. The foundation for the rise of David has been laid. Saul has demonstrated that he is a bad king, and now, Saul’s kingdom is being slowly ripped from his hands as David begins to rise to power. In 1 Samuel 16:1-13, we saw David anointed as the future king of Israel. This is the first major transition to the rise of David as king. And now, we will see the second major transition when David is brought to the royal court by Saul to serve under him. Which is ironic, because if Saul knew David was to be king, he would kill him. But instead, he essentially gives David the keys to the kingdom.
In this podcast, we will look at the mighty men of scripture and see how they lived lives not for their own glory, but to the Kavod of Yahweh. The glory of the God of Israel. We have finally made our way to the life of David, but I want us to take a step back today and look at the introduction of Jonathan. Being Saul’s eldest son, Jonathan is the heir apparent to the kingdom of Israel. And unlike his father, Jonathan would make for a good king. And being the heir to his father’s throne also makes him a rival to the throne of David. But instead of being David’s rival, Jonathan becomes his best friend and a true brother. There is no hostility between the two but only brotherly love. So, before we progress in the story of David, I want to introduce you to this mighty man of God named Jonathan.
In this podcast, we will look at the mighty men of scripture and see how they lived lives not for their own glory, but to the Kavod of Yahweh. The glory of the God of Israel. We have been working our way to the life of David, and today, we will begin looking at the rise of David beginning in the midst of Saul’s demise.
In 1 Samuel 15:25, Saul was rejected as king and in verse 35 we see that it grieved Samuel and rightfully so; however, when Saul was first rejected as king back in 1 Samuel 13:14, God gave us a promise that he would not leave Israel kingless. Instead he promises, “[That he] has sought out a man after his own heart, and [He] has commanded him to be prince over his people.” Not only will God raise up a new king, but this new king will be one who loves the Lord. So our story today begins on the heel of Saul’s rejection and in the midst of Samuel’s grief, and it will end with the hope in this new king.
Today’s story comes from 1 Samuel 16:1-13.
