It was with great sadness that KCLR learned of the death of Piltown's Ned Walsh over the weekend.

Ned was involved with the Iverk Show for a remarkable 73 years, and to many became known as "the man at the gate". He was also known as the Coalman locally given the fuel business he operated for many years. As had been the case since the early 1950s, Ned assisted those parking on the grounds of his beloved Piltown GAA Club during last Saturday's show. To the end, Ned contributed.

Survived by wife Stella, children Anne-Marie and Eoin along with his sisters and grandchildren, Ned, as the Iverk Show's Facebook tribute put it, "was always willing to lend a hand, from collecting equipment and getting all our signs ready for the Show, to being the familiar face welcoming people through the gate. If Ned took on a job, you knew it was in safe hands".

Paying tribute to its past Chairperson and President, Piltown GAA Club described Ned as "one of Piltown GAA Club and Kilkenny GAA’s greatest followers and supporters. He dedicated so much of his life to our club, our community, and the Iverk Show."

On today's KCLR Daily, fellow Iverk Show stalwarts John Flynn and Norman Storey paid tribute to their friend and colleague, and we also heard from Ned himself whom we interviewed at a Civic Reception afforded the Iverk Show at Kilkenny County Hall on May 18th last.

The need to double the number of CCTV cameras in Kilkenny City was among several issues highlighted during the August meeting of Kilkenny's Community Local Safety Partnership (KCLSP).

Speaking at the Partnership's August meeting, KCLSP Chair, Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick (FF) said the case for increasing the number of CCTV cameras from 22 to 44 had been well made.

Councillor Fitzpatrick said it was high time to get the additional cameras installed. He also spoke to KCLR News about how the new policing model was settling in, the need to curb dangerous driving and why he felt it was important for the KCLSP to meet throughout the summer.

A significant increase in reported minor assaults while a smaller hike in reported assaults causing harm were among the headline figures disclosed at the August meeting of Kilkenny’s Local Community Safety Partnership (KLCSP).

The figures, presented by Superintendent Sean O’Meara, are based on operational crime data extracted from An Garda Síochána’s PULSE system, which assist the force’s operational activity and planning.
