Cool Block is set to begin its initiative to make Isla Vista the first Carbon Neutral community by 2025. KCSB reporter Jacob Martin talks to Cool Block Program manager Robin Elander about their plans for Isla Vista.

KCSB's Danielle Smith spoke with researcher and professor at UC Santa Barbara, Rene Weber. Professor Weber conducted a study which debunked the myth that films staring white-male leads do better at the box office, showing that this is not true: films starring people of color and women in leading roles do just as well, if not better.

Renowned professor and feminist icon Anita Hill visited UCSB, speaking on America’s deep-rooted climate of sexual harassment and how to proceed in the wake of the #MeToo movement and Brent Kavanaugh hearings.

In her lecture, entitled “From Social Movement to Social Impact: Putting an End to Sexual Harassment,” she talked about speaking truth to power, overarching cultural misogyny, and the importance of trusting survivors. KCSB’s Ashley Rusch has the story.

The smell of tear gas was in the air 50 years ago this month, as student activists took to the streets to protest the Vietnam War, the draft, slum-like living conditions and more.

The war-zone like scene, adjacent to the Santa Barbara coast, inspired student Ted Levatter to write "Isla Vista Riot Torn Blues," while looking from his balcony at demonstrators gathering in a park.

KCSB's Lisa Osborn spoke with Levatter about his song, and his time in Isla Vista during the student uprising that came to be known as the "Year of Rebellion."

“There, Where the Bank Burned,” is a radio documentary commemorating the events of February 25, 1970 in Isla Vista, CA, when activists set fire to the local Bank of the America.

Produced by Tim Owens, a former KCSB student general manager and broadcaster. The program digs into the KCSB archives and other vintage recordings to feature KCSB News coverage of the Isla Vista riots, the bank burning and recordings depicting police violence against protestors, including the sounds of deputies breaking down apartment doors to arrest the residents living inside.

Vanessa Moreno, a spokesperson for the U.S. Census Bureau, spoke with KCSB about the student census count. KCSB's Daisy Kershaw has the story.
