  • Bitch Craft: Editors & Publishing
There are several kinds of editors in a publishing house -- it depends on their structure. I'm going to talk about my experiences with various kinds.Acquisition EditorContent EditorLine EditorProofreaderTechnical Editor

  • Bitch Craft: The Importance of Being Earnest
Jilly wants to talk about characterization so:Humans are complicated, messy, flawed, mean, good, bad, neutral, and everything in between. As a writer, your relationship with a character in your head is important because it shapes your narrative and the presentation of that character in your story. If you don't know them--you can't write them well or consistently.CHARACTER PROFILE WORKSHEET EXAMPLE Tony Serial Killer fics:Good Boy by CopperbadgeStyle by Copperbadge

  • Fence Sitting & Other Fandom Misdemeanors
Fashi0n asks: What do you think an author should do if they notice that in a story they had completed that one of their character arcs isn’t as fully developed as it should be? Edit a posted work, write a sequel, or just shrug it off?

  • Bitch Craft: Animal Characters + Point of View Discussion
Do you have a different process that you use for animal characters than human ones? Some of my favorites are: Quark in What Might Have Been; Rowena in the Soulmate Bond; and Bramwell in Darkly Loyal. They all have such vivid personalities and 2 of them do that without talking. Do you do a lot of planning for their personalities or do they tend to flow once you get writing? What animals have you had the most fun writing? Does it take a lot of work to keep track of where the animals would logically be at any given point once you’ve put them in the story?

  • Herding Cats & Other Acts of Emotional Masochism
Bad habits, reading fan fiction, creative synergy, and writer interaction -- how being in a writer-pile is both good and bad for you. No one challenges me more than another writer. And honestly, no one could fuck me up writer-wise more than another writer. It's easy to brush off the opinions of non-writers because I don't take them seriously as it concerns my craft. The same can't be said of another writer. This is how and why a Beta or Alpha reader can literally be the hand that rocks the cradle that your word baby is taking a nap in.

  • Is Fandom Ruining You?
I've often said that I think fandom is a good place for writers to practice and learn about themselves as writers. But is there a line when that process becomes a bad thing? Does fandom give readers unreasonable expectations regarding professional projects? When a reader is used to a 300k word epic--will a 75k professionally published novel seem "too short" to them?Do fandom readers spoil writers with attention?I'm gonna talk about this. Also, we're hours away from the new RT Challenge: Battle of the Five Fandoms

  • The Wild Hare Project - Part 2
The Wild Hare Project is a writing collective, a place carved out on the Internet for writers to explore their craft with no deadlines, no ticking clocks, and no expectations. One night, Jilly James and I got a wild hair up our booties and we created this borg-like thing. Resistance will be considered lame.www.wildhareproject.com

  • Bitch Craft: Reoccurring Original Characters
Rothesis Asks: I’ve finally listened to both character drift podcasts. I’d like you to expand on something, if you feel comfortable discussing it. You talked about both the core idea of a character and tweaking a character to fit the story you are using them in at the moment. You have several OCs that you have used in more than one posted story. Could you go over what you consider the core characteristics of one, and how you adapted them to fit the next world you placed them in?For example, the Thaddeus Banner in Pheonix interacts very differently with Harry than the Thaddeus in Soulmate Bond. However, I believe most of that is the difference in HARRY’s background. The only change to Banner that I can identify as a reader, is that he has parslemagic in Soulmate Bond. In contrast, the Chase Harris in Ties That Bind feels very similar to the Chase Harris in Sentinels of Atlantis, but I’m fairly sure there had to be a lot of changes (besides the obvious of house training and sentinel abilities).
