A woman driving a car with a ‘catch me if you can’ bumper sticker was arrested for dangerous driving and had her car seized in Tralee. Gardaí were trying to scatter a large number of cars that had gathered in the county town, when the woman drove away at speed and dangerously overtook other vehicles. That’s the question being posed by a candidate in the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) presidential election, Martin Stapleton. Mr Stapleton has said the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue should not attend the National Ploughing Championships unless he brings his chequebook to pay delayed payments to farmers. Payments related to Areas of National Constraints (ANC) and the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) payments are being paid later than usual.

Gardaí are investigating an incident at Inch Beach, in which a teenage girl was attacked reportedly by four dogs. Local Fianna Fáil councillor Michael O’Shea spoke to Jerry about the attack. Comment line caller John O’Connor from Killorglin told Jerry about what has happened to him on Rossbeigh Beach.

International experts have praised palliative care in Kerry in a new report stating that services in this county could be used as a template nationally. HSE Cork/Kerry Community Healthcare commissioned the report, with the objective of learning from the development of palliative care services in Kerry. Jerry spoke to Dr Patricia Sheahan, clinical lead for Kerry Specialist Palliative Care Service, Michael Fitzgerald, Kerry Hospice Foundation volunteer, and one of the report’s authors, Dr Edelweiss Aldasoro, senior researcher at the International Federation of Integrated Care. Many listeners shared their experiences including Cathal Walshe whose late wife June was cared for by the service.

Want to get rid of an old mattress? Well, this is your chance to do so courtesy of Kerry County Council. People will be able to dispose of mattresses (maximum of 2 per car) at the North Kerry Landfill on tomorrow, September 6th and Thursday, September 7th. The event will run from 10am to 4pm both days. North Kerry Landfill is situated at Muingnaminnane, Kielduff near Lyreacrompane. Paul Neary, acting director of environment services with Kerry County Council, spoke to Jerry.

Mary, not her real name, spoke to Jerry about her young son who received inappropriate and excessive medication while attending North Kerry Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). They received an apology from the HSE and were told in February that the boy would get medical support. Mary says they’ve now being told that her son is not included in the support scheme. He’s also excluded from state compensation being given to patients affected by poor treatment at South Kerry CAMHS. Mary’s voice has also been changed to protect her son’s identity.

Dick Walsh from Ballybunion is the author and director of Drainage Scheme, which will be performed in Ireland’s most prestigious theatre, the Abbey, later this month. He told Jerry why he chose the seemingly unlikely topic for an artistic work.

It’s certainly back to school weather as Kerry is experiencing sunny spells of up to 28 degrees! Jerry spoke to Mark Bowe, meteorologist with Met Éireann, about the good weather and for how long it should last.
