This morning -- votes are still be counted in the special election to replace Kevin McCarthy in California's 20th Congressional District.
And while this was the *third election held in this process, the results coming in right now will decide who completes the rest of McCarthy's term.
17's Jenny Huh has more this morning on the high-stakes race.
We turn now to a developing story we've been following of a massive police presence in northwest Bakersfield. Details are limited at this hour -- but police have confirmed they're investigating the death of a man. At around 2:45 yesterday afternoon, multiple Bakersfield police officers and Kern County sheriff's deputies responded to an area near 7th Standard Road and Shane Street.
You can see the massive police presence -- with dozens of officers on scene.
Bakersfield police say the department was asked to assist KCSO with a death investigation.
And revealing the body of a man was found in a vehicle just north of the roadway.
No other details have been released.

A homicide investigation is under way this morning after a person was shot to death in east Bakersfield. Details are limited as officers are still trying to figure out what happened. The shooting happened on Union Avenue near Brundage Lane before midnight.
We know at least one person was shot and killed.
Their identity has not been publicly released.
We don't know if the shooter is still on the loose.
17 news is your local election headquarters.
Today is the Special General Election within the 20th district to fill the remainder of former congressman Kevin McCarthy's term.

It's shaping up to be a busy summer for local firefighters.
A fast-moving brush fire burned more than 100 acres near the base of the Grapevine. The so-called "Wind Fire" broke out just after 7 yesterday morning west of Interstate 5, just south of Laval Road.
According to Kern County Fire, it burned 121 acres, but is now 100% contained.
This is just the latest in a string of recent brush fires, including one that shut down Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon late last week.

Iran's President confirmed dead this morning after a helicopter crash yesterday. Iran state media says president Ebrahim Raisi was returning from an event when it made a hard landing in a mountainous area.
NBC's Drew Petrimoulx has the latest on this developing story.
A man is dead this morning after being hit by a car in Northwest Bakersfield. It happened on Hageman Road near Calloway Drive.
Police say the man was hit by an SUV and died.
His identity hasn't been publicly released.
Officers say the driver who hit the man cooperated with the investigation.
Speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the fatal crash.
We now know the name of a woman killed in a crash last Sunday north of Pond 69-year-old Herminia Perez was the passenger of a vehicle that crashed into another on May 12th about 3:30 a.m. on Highway 43, just north of Schuster Road.
She was pronounced dead on scene from blunt force injuries.
The manner of death has been ruled an accident.
And two people from Tehachapi killed in a crash in the Kern River Canyon last Sunday have been identified.
75-year-old Julie Robin OShea and 77-year-old George Peter MacQueen were killed their motorcycle went down a steep embankment and overturned. It happened just after 4 p.m. on Highway 178 last Sunday.
Fire crews had to drop 50 feet down into the canyon to reach them.
CHP says alcohol and drugs *were factors in the crash.
A small earthquake rattled the desert community of Ridgecrest yesterday morning. According the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was measured at a 3.3 magnitude.
This latest temblor comes just a day after a 3.9 magnitude quake was felt in southern California.
Fire crews raced to a massive house fire in northwest Bakersfield Saturday afternoon. The kern County and Bakersfield fire departments were dispatched to this reinforced structure fire on Timbercreek Drive just after 2pm.
Fire crews deployed the fire ladder and multiple hoses to douse the flames.
No injuries have been reported.
No word yet how many people and pets are displaced from this fire.
An investigation into the cause is underway.

We have more information this morning on a story we brought you as breaking news yesterday on 17 News at Sunrise.
It's about an officer-involved shooting in an area near Brimhall Road and Calloway Drive.
According to the Sheriff's Office, a welfare check turned into an exchange of gunfire with the suspect.
But, KCSO will not tell us whether the person shot is dead or alive.
17's Mikhala Armstrong reports.
It is already turning into a busy fire season for local firefighters...
As fires rage on across Kern County... including one northeast of Bakersfield. The so-called "Cow fire" started just after 11:30 yesterday morning along Highway 178 and Kern River Canyon Road.
It was actually two fires - about a mile apart.
Some 80 firefighters from multiple agencies fought the flames from the ground and the air.
Emergency crews were forced to close Highway 178 for most of the day, due to the hazards from the fire, falling rocks, and heavy equipment operating on the road.
One fire was quickly contained at two acres.
The second spread up the steep wall of the canyon.
At last check, that fire has burned 132 acres and is 60-percent contained.
As of this morning, the CHP page reports the highway is back open.
If you ask firefighters, they'll tell you fire season is year-round in California.

A man is in the hospital this morning following an officer-involved shooting in northwest Bakersfield.
It happened in a neighborhood down the street from Liberty High School. Last night it all started as a welfare check for a man reported to be suffering with a mental health crisis and possibly having a gun.
Over the course of several hours last night, deputies say they arrived at the scene and tried several ways to de-escalate the situation.
K-C-S-O says the subject allegedly fired on deputies, hence the officer-involved-shooting.
No Sheriff's Office personnel were injured, and the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. This is an ongoing investigation and K-C-S-O is asking to to contact the Sheriff's Office if you have any information.

Now to education news this morning...
The Kern County Board of Education voted last night to adopt a policy that helps determine the appropriateness of books in schools.
For months... the policy had sparked frustrations and even verbal attacks on board members out of concerns this would mean a ban on books.
17's Jenny Huh files this report.
And a local family is still searching for justice after a woman was shot to death in east Bakersfield.
The family of Margarita "Maggie" Lopez was at yesterday's Panama-Buena Vista Union School District board meeting to demand Paul Magallanes, a teacher, not be paid during his leave.
Magallanes was booked on suspicion of Lopez's murder, but two days later, he was released. 17 news attempted to contact Magallanes, but we were unable to reach him.
Once again, he has not been arrested or charged in this case.
In a statement, the School District said Magallanes has been on administrative leave since his arrest and will not be returning.
This case is still under investigation
Now to an update on a story we brought you yesterday morning.
We are learning three families are left homeless after flames roared through an apartment building in Oildale.

Firefighters raced to put out a fire in Oildale earlier this morning.It happened just after 1 a.m. on Washington Avenue.
You can see in this video flames erupting out of a window.
No one was hurt, although we're learning one family has been displaced.
The cause of this fire is under investigation

Most of us are willing to help people in need – especially children -- and social media often provides a good way to do it
But a different type of sympathy-garnering Facebook scam making the rounds in Kern County isn't looking for your money -- at least not directly -- but rather your likes and shares.
17's Robert Price explains.
There were tense moments at Liberty High School yesterday after a threat was found written inside of a bathroom. Officers at the school say they looked into the threat but say it wasn't credible.
We asked KHSD officials what exactly was written inside the bathroom, but have not heard back as of newstime.
And another threat at a Bakersfield school - this one targeting Harris Elementary School.
According to Bakersfield Police, two people in a car made a simulated firearm with their hands and made threats to shoot.
The school was placed on lockdown.
BPD later determined there was no credible threat.

The Geomagetic Storm was erupting in full force this weekend, and some residents captured its beauty from Bakersfield.
17's Rob Hagan has a closer look.
Two people were killed in a crash in the Kern River Canyon It happened just after 4 p.m. yesterday on Highway 178.
CHP says a motorcyclist and car crashed into each other.
The crash is under investigation.
And one person is dead after being ejected in a high-speed rollover crash near McFarland Saturday night.
It happened near Sherwood Avenue and northbound Highway 99 before 8:30 p.m.
The cause of the crash is unknown.
An investigation is underway.
Fire crews raced out to a 2-alarm brush fire Saturday evening in East Bakersfield. The grass fire was in the area of Panorama Drive and Morning Drive Saturday at 4pm.
The Bakersfield Fire Department and Kern County Fire Department were on scene keeping the flames from spreading to nearby homes.
No injuries were reported.
Just days after a u.S. Report concluded it's likely israel violated international law in gaza, u.S. Lawmakers are defending and attacking it.
This as israel continues to bombard rafah in the hunt for hamas militants.
Nbc's brie jackson is in washington.
protests erupted at duke university Saturday just as comedian jerry seinfeld was set to deliver the commencement address.
Seinfeld was met with a wave of boos when graduates walked out at the start of his speech..
This was the latest wave of anti-war protests at college graduations across the country this weekend.
Other students and some attendees in the bleachers also stood up from their seats and began walking out of the stadium.
Seinfeld, who is jewish, has been vocally supportive of israel and visited the country following the october 7th attack.
He was also receiving an honorary degree from the school, where his son is currently enrolled and his daughter previously graduated.
It's unclear whether the booing was intended for seinfeld or the student protest, or potentially both, but chants of "Jerry" were heard shortly after.
Seinfeld was later able to deliver his speech uninterrupted.

We begin this morning with a closer look at the "unknowns" of the investigation into Kern County 2nd District Supervisor Zack Scrivner.
Despite being a public official facing very public allegations of child sexual assault... so much about Scrivner's case remains private.
17's Jenny Huh reports, some residents are calling for his resignation, while others think Scrivner is getting special treatment.
It has been a busy week for local firefighters. Another small brush fire broke out yesterday.
It happened on North Chester and Beardsley Avenues around noon.
Thick, dark smoke could be seen hanging over the area before it was eventually put out.
This is the latest in a string of small fires in Kern County this week, including one that torched some 12-hundred acres near Maricopa.
A firefighter was injured while protecting homes from a different fire in East Bakersfield.
This one started around 2 p.m. on Oregon Street near McCurdy Drive.
Kern County Fire says dry brush caught fire and threatened at least seven homes.
But the only property lost in the fire was a shed.
A battalion chief who dragged over 300 feet of hose to a nearby fire hydrant is credited with saving the other properties.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Near California City, fire crews worked hard to try and save a large home that caught fire early yesterday morning.
The 42-hundred square foot home on Neuralia Road is located in the community of Cantil.
Kern County fire says due to its remote location, water had to be trucked in to fight the flames.
Most of the home was burned along with eight acres of grass.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

It's been more than two weeks since Kern County Supervisor Zack Scrivner was accused of sexually assaulting a child.
His whereabouts since that night have remained unknown.
But Scrivner's attorney H-A Sala released a statement, saying his Scrivner is on "a medical leave of absence."The statement went on to say Kern's interim Chief Administrative Officer was notified of the leave on Monday.
It does not say how long the leave will last.
It comes after Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting in which Scrivner was noticably absent.
Scrivner has not been arrested and he has not been charged with any crimes
Now to your 17 crime watch and a plea this morning from the family of a woman who was shot to death two weeks ago in East Bakersfield.
The man arrested in connection to the death of Margarita "Maggie" Lopez has since been released from custody.
17's Cecilia Trevino has more on the family's search for justice.
Three pounds.
That's how much marijuana the Bakersfield Police Department says a local woman tried to turn over to BPD headquarters last week. We've been tracking this story closely.
Last Friday Erica de La Rosa called 911 when some elementary students found a box full of marijuana stashed behind some bushes near McCullough Elementary School.
Dispatchers told her to take it to the police station.
But de La Rosa claims personnel turned her away when she got there, saying the lobby was closed.
That's when she called us.
Officers finally came to de La Rosa's door last Saturday.
They confiscated the marijuana, telling her to throw away the drug paraphrenalia left in the box.
We reached out to BPD for comment on this story.
Police explained the delay, saying the calls from De La Rosa weren't a priority that day because the marijuana didn't pose an immediate threat to the public.
