  • Formula For Trust & Collaboration 3 +3 +3 +5 +2 I Andrew Oberthur
The relationship between parents and teachers have no doubt strengthened these last few months due to homeschooling.
It is, however, essential to continue building on these relationships to ensure there is effective communication for positive family-school partnerships for the benefits of all involved, that bring children, parents and teachers.
To talk to us about this today and how we can formulate a relationship of trust and collaboration we welcome our special guest  Andrew Oberthur, a Primary School Principal with over 30 years experience teaching and leading primary schools in Brisbane.
In 2018 Andrew published his first book “Are You Ready for Primary School This Year? which is about building a culture of trust, collaboration and enquiry between parents and teachers.

    We ask Andrew questions including:

Have you noticed the relationship between parents and teachers has strengthened due to homeschooling?

The relationship between parents and teachers can be strained at times. What has been your experience with this?

Research shows that parental involvement can free teachers to focus more on the task of teaching children. What are your thoughts on this?
Your article explains when a child comes home from school and shares a concern with a parent, a parent has the choice of 3 RESPONSES. Can you please explain them to us?
What are the 3 QUESTIONS that a parent should ask the school?

What are the mandatory policies and procedures for all schools?  What questions parents be asking when they enrolling their child into a new school?
When a parent engages with their child's school, what are the common themes or reasons why parents engage?

Why is it important that the parents know why they are engaging?

What are the 3 QUESTIONS teachers should ask parents in response to any of their concerns?

You've mentioned that when a parent goes to their child’s school they usually approach the teachers or the principal for one of 5 REASONS, can you explain what they are?

Lastly, you mention when teachers respond to any parent request the teacher should filter their response with these 2 CRITERIA. Can you please explain what they are?

  • Movement, Music, Nutrition & Children’s Growing Brains I Dr. Tessa Grigg
As a parent there is no doubt you want the very best for your children and to give them the life they deserve. With so many opportunities available for children, how do you know where to put your focus when it comes to providing the best opportunities to help nurture the development of their brain?
Lucky for us we are joined by our special guest, Dr Tessa Grigg, who is here today to share her clinical experience on what you can do to that is simple and cost effective. She will also discuss the links between movement, music and nutrition and the growing brain.
We ask Dr Tessa questions including:
What are the core disciplines are that parents should be focusing on when wanting to assist their child in their development?
There has been some interesting research from Italy and the USA that assesses the nurturing of young brains through movement, music and nutrition. Can you tell us a little bit about this?
What has been your personal experiences of addressing Movement, Music and Nutrition to help develop childrens brains?
Do see any one being more important than another?
Can you explain why movement is important for a developing brain?
Can you explain why movement and music are linked to the developing brain?
And with the importance of movement and music in focus what part does nutrition play in the development of the brain?
What experiences can we provide preschoolers that are quite simple and cost effective to assist the development of their brain?
Have you seen the results of addressing one or more of these issues for a child with challenges.
You’ve mentioned before that experiences we give children appear to be the basis of their brains development. Why is it important for parents to provide a wide range of experiences for children’s developing brain?
The physical structure of the brain changes throughout our lives as a result of our experiences and the environment we live in. Does this mean that children from lower socio economic background are likely to have their brain develop differently than a child that has experiences from a middle to higher socio economic demographic?

  • Covid-19 Lockdown & Increase Alcohol Consumption I Dr. Erin Lalor
It is common that when people find themselves in stressful situations they tend to increase alcohol consumption as a coping mechanism. COVID-19 has been no exception.
Recently the Alcohol and Drug Foundation launched a community health initiative ‘You haven’t been drinking alone’ to better understand the effects of alcohol consumption on Australian households during COVID-19 lockdown.
To talk to us about their findings we welcome Dr. Erin Lalor, CEO of the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.
Dr. Erin Lalor has over 20 years of leadership experience in the health sector, and was most recently the CEO of the National Stroke Foundation and a Director of the World Stroke Organisation. With a Bachelor of Applied Science and a PhD she sits on a number of advisory committees in relation to public health, clinical improvements and evidence based approaches to healthcare delivery.
We ask Dr Lalor questions including:
Please tell us about the ‘You Haven’t Been Drinking Alone’ community health initiative and what prompted you to launch it?
What did the Alcohol and Drug Foundation notice about parents drinking behaviours during lockdown?
What would you say to a parent who may feel this is shaming them?
Why is drinking not an effective coping mechanism during the COVID-19 era?
What impact does it have on children if they witness their parents drinking alcohol?
In your opinion, would you say it’s critically important that children do not learn to view alcohol as a coping mechanism or to think drinking alcohol is a healthy lifestyle choice?
Do these behaviour patterns have any long term affects on a child going into adulthood?
What if parents find that they have been drinking more and are now struggling to cut back?
Do you think that we may have a significant public health issue on our hands, with more people using alcohol to self-medicate?
What are some of the more positive and effective ways we can cope during the pandemic that can help our children to stay mentally healthy?

  • Self Care Tips After Lockdown I Krissy Regan
Now that we're ascending out of lockdown and possibly starting to look at life with a fresh or renewed perspective, have you thought to yourself, I'm not sure I want to go back to the hectic, busy and stressful life I was living before we entered into the stay-at-home era?
I mean, why were we ever pushing ourselves to the extreme before anyway? Think about it, we live in first world country, we have a roof over our heads, enough food, clothing, warmth all the things we need to survive, and then some. Millions of people around the world would do anything to have these luxuries.
So when is enough enough? At what cost are we willing to sacrifice our physical, mental and spiritual health moving forward?
To talk with us about this today we welcome back Krissy Regan. Krissy is founder of Mindful Mums Queensland and author of the new book Broken to Unbreakable, 12 Steps to and Unbreakable Mind, Body and Spirit.
    We ask Krissy questions including:
If the COVID-19 era has taught us anything its the beauty and serenity in slowing down. Something that many of us had to be forced to do to experience what it is like to live in a peaceful calm state. What is the difference between Doing and Being?
What to do when we realise we’ve taken on too much?
Why do you think we allowed life to get so busy? Was it just a by-product of the rising cost of living, or always wanting more or allowing consumerism to get the best of us? or something else?
How can we overcome this? We all have bills to pay?
By living life in such a frantic pace, what do you think we are miss seeing in the big picture of life?
How do you think the COVID-19 era could change life for the better?
In you article 'Am I Doing Enough ' you mention the real cost of ‘doing’ all the time, means we spend less time ‘being’, and it’s when we are in ‘being’ mode as opposed to ‘doing’ mode that we repair, create, connect and feel the most love. Can you please What do you mean by this?
Can you explain to us what the Price-Cost Iceberg Model is and how it's relevant to our lives?
Do you have any simple tips we can apply to shift our mindset?
How did you apply that model help your personal health and wellbeing?
What are your recommendations on Things to consider when signing our kids up for activities?
