  • Activities To Support Your Child’s Gross Motor Skills Whilst Home In Isolation
Social isolation has placed so much of our lives on hold and meant the flow of life as stopped, just for the short term.
One thing that won’t stop for anything is the growth and development of our babies and children. If you are home wondering how you can make sure your children’s gross motor skills continue to develop as they should over the next several months then you’re in the right place.
Today we are joined today with Emily Hayles / Principal Physiotherapist and Owner at Move and Play Paediatric Therapy.
Emily is also the author of of ‘Braver than you think: How to help your child with a disability live their best life’
Move and Play Paediatric Therapy is a children’s physiotherapy and occupational therapy service based in Mackay, Queensland. Their aim is to help children, families, schools and communities to support children’s development and to help children and families to live happy and connected lives.
    We ask Emily questions including:
Why is it so important for babies and children to develop and work on their gross motor skills?
How do you help parents and families to develop their kids' motor skills at home?
How can ‘therapy’ or ‘developmental activities’ be made part of everyday life?
What developmental issues have you found parents are most concerned about at this time?
Will the lack of face to face appointments affect children in their development? If so, what can parents do to prevent this from happening?

  • How To Keep Your Little Ones Kidsafe At Home | Melanie Courtney
For many, the idea of self-isolation with the ability to stay home is a dream come true. No drop-off and pick from childcare, kinder preschool, or primary school. No peak hour traffic and let’s face it, you can stay in your PJ’s all day if you like.
But, when people are stuck indoors for long periods of time, especially with young children, it can increase the risk of exposure to safety hazards in and around the home.
This is something we need to take into consideration in view of our current situation when let's face it, we are all busier than normal juggling working from home combined with the extra stress and responsibility of supervising, entertaining and homeschooling the kids.
To help bring this important topic to light and share expert information and advice on how we can make our homes ‘Kidsafe” we welcome our special guest, Melanie Courtney, Kidsafe Victoria CEO.
    We ask Melanie questions including:
What are the stats - how many children get injured from preventable injuries each year?
What are some of the top safety hazards to be aware of in your home that can cause injuries to children?
What can parents do to prevent these injuries?
What work is Kidsafe doing in conjunction with the Government to make a positive change?

  • Creativity & It's Relationship to COVID-19 | Dr Tessa Grigg
Considering we have been home in insolation for a few weeks now, you may have started running out of fresh ideas to keep your preschooler engaged.
Coupled with this, due to shop closures and accessibility to craft supplies, and also possible reduced income it’s not always feasible to keep purchasing new toys and games to keep them entertained.
There’s no doubt that having the kids home has presented a world of challenges as social isolation has taken away much of what is good for children. That being the educational and social context of preschool, kindergarten and daycare, holidays, access to entertainment, libraries, outdoor play areas.
Our chat today is not about focusing on the challenges, rather about presenting creative solutions to help and provide support.
Looking for the positives in the challenging time of restrictions. And also how to find and source inspiration from creativity as an educational outlet for our preschoolers.
To help provide this we are very fortunate today to welcome our special guest, Dr Tessa Grigg.
Dr Tessa Grigg is the Research and Education Manager at Toddler Kindy GymbaROO and KindyROO, She is a part-time lecturer at the University of Canterbury, NZ, a teacher and producer of children’s music.
Dr Tessa Grigg has over 20 years experience in the Early Childhood Education sector and a wealth of knowledge on this topic.
We ask Dr Tessa questions including:
You have mentioned before that this time of being ‘at-home’ is the perfect opportunity to teach children about creativity. Can you tell us more about this?
You’ve mentioned creativity is in abundance at the moment and this is a good thing for children to be part of. With limited resources at home, how is this possible, and how can we help foster the development of creativity in our children?
How do children learn through play?
What is an open-ended play experience is, and how can parents provide them with the current restrictions we are facing?
What is the relationship between creativity and COVID-19?
What are the challenges for parents in this time of social distancing and young children?
Your article talks about creativity and it implies that it is not just about the Arts. What is the definition of creativity?
What can parents do to encourage creativity in their children?
How do you see children benefiting from the experience of home isolation and what valuable lessons and life long skills could they be learning and developing through this experience?
