Russell doesn’t want to talk about his job. He doesn’t think he’s that good at it, and would rather talk about the literally zillions of bands he’s been in, records he loves and breakfast cereal. And we let him for a little bit, but we try to get to the bottom of what exactly he does as a mechanic, how it’s gotten more difficult as cars become more computer-based, what the work situation is like at the garage and more. Along the way we uncover some great stories about acquiring and keeping the Pontiac Bonneville ambulance used by the Mummies in running order, drag racing as a kid and why he isn’t as good at slot-car racing as you’d expect from a member of the Phantom Surfers. Do we figure out his job? Maybe not. Do we have fun trying? Absolutely.

You probably already know her from her numerous bands, and if you’ve spent any time on the West Coast, you’ve probably gotten your hair done or bought some rad piece of clothing from Tina. In this episode we talk about the formation of the Trashwomen, starting Down at Lulu’s with fellow hairdresser and vintage clothing obsessive Seth Bogart (of Hunx and His Punx), her big move to Portland and why people always mistake her for a New Yorker wherever she goes. If you’ve ever wanted to hear a story about refusing to sell a vintage band shirt to someone who can’t pass the ‘fan test’ (and who doesn’t?) this episode is for you!

Lulu has loved being behind a camera since her teenage years, snapping photos of rock ‘n roll bands and selling them, as well as spending time at the horse track taking pictures of races. Her love of horses briefly had her considering a career as a jockey, but a chance gig helping her filmmaker sister Maria led to a career as a director of photography. In our in-depth conversation we talk about the technical side of cameras and filmmaking, her inspiration and varied projects, how her day job worked as the Fastbacks took off in the early 90s and what she’s working on now with the band and in her career. All throughout, Lulu is funny, knowledgeable and honest about the challenges in both her music and film careers.

John Holmstrom is the founder and editor of Punk Magazine, which helped give the name, identity and personality to the music we love and spawned zine culture as we know it. His distinctive art is instantly recognizable to anyone who loves music, appearing on the Ramones ‘Rocket to Russia’ and ‘Road to Ruin’ albums (among many other places). What’s not as well known is the challenges of making a living off of art and how the pursuit of a steady paycheck can be incredibly challenging, even for a ‘famous’ artist. We talk about John’s love of music, his college years at SVA and learning from iconic artists like Harvey Kurtzman, his transition from art to full-time editor at High Times magazine, and making ends meet in a changing downtown Manhattan neighborhood that no longer looks like home. It’s a fascinating, insightful and sometimes extremely funny conversation that gets behind the art that helped define punk rock.

Title: 65 Dave “The Spazz” Abramson - Broadcast Engineer ( Sea Monkeys / The Yams / The Shemps)

Description: You may know Dave from his time fronting the NYC punk legends Sea Monkeys, or from his long-running WFMU radio show “Music to Spazz By”, but few people know about Dave’s career as a broadcast engineer for a variety of radio stations. We find out what a broadcast engineer does (including how to get the ‘NPR voice’), polling strangers on the telephone, speaking with Jerry Lewis about long-dead actors, dressing up as a duck for early jobs and how his career’s turning point came from breaking his car key in the ignition. Lots of esoteric music, film, television and pop-culture references in this one, so grab your grandpa for reference sake and dig in!

What better way to celebrate the holidays than talking about junk food and music with Mikey Erg and Cristy Road? We were a little loopy for this one, and the result is a good time and a lot of laughs (warning to that one guy who didn’t like our laughs). Mikey Erg has been in every punk band out there. In fact, if just ONE member of each of his past bands tunes in, we’re guaranteed our most listened to episode ever. We also had so much fun with Cristy Road that we asked her back and she gave us each a tarot card reading from her deck. What will it reveal? Tune in to find out, and happy holidays to all!

Cristy is an acclaimed artist, writer and musician whose art and creativity developed through punk rock, but encompasses her cultural, gender and political identities to create work that is intensely personal but also incredibly relatable. From her bands to her wildly-popular tarot card deck and beyond, we discuss creativity, growing up different and finding punk rock, the pull of ‘conventional’ family life and love and much more. We also sing a lot of songs about candy and talk about monsters on toilets, so you’re sure to have fun with this one while learning a lot about Cristy, her work and how she balances the two.

Let’s face it - if you grew up in the punk scene you probably fall into one of two camps - you spend a lot of time at the dentist as an adult or you’ve never been and your mouth tells the tale. In our fascinating conversation with Dr. Laura Railand, we discuss how your teeth and gums can be the source and indicator of larger health issues, as well as some fun stories about her career path that led her around the country and across industries. This episode is way more fun than your average trip to the dentist, we promise you that.
