Exodus is a story of deceit, danger, and death – written long ago likely after generations of handing it down orally. Sometimes, without further examination, things can seem a little strange. Tonight, seemingly out of nowhere, we find ourselves in one of those moments. As Moses and his family head back to Egypt tonight, Kindred Church, Let’s Get Weird.

Tonight we continue the conversation between Moses and God at the burning bush. We explore the relationship between identity and calling, what to do with our fear and hesitation, and how to discern what is only ours to do. Moses’ story assures us that even when we aren’t sure who we are, God knows who we are and who we can become.

Moses is into his fourth decade chasing sheep as a shepherd when he meets the God of his people speaking from a strange fire. As he encounters the God that calls himself “I AM,” his conversion experience will come with a lot of reluctance and doubt. We meet this head-on with our own stories and struggles in the collision of Jesus, who tells us “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Tonight we connect the two ideas in one offer of freedom and real life.

In week three of our study of Exodus, Moses, raised like royalty in Pharoah’s palace, awakens to the plight of his people enslaved in Egypt. He makes some big choices that lead to his exile and some huge life changes. At just the right time, when the exhaustion of his people was most intense, amid the changing political landscape, and a collective outcry to God activates the zakar of God … our story of Exodus is about to get really good.

Exodus is off to a fast start as we are confronted with a difficult passage that leads us to see the way God creates life out of death – it’s not always quick enough for us, but it always happens in the perfect way. The story of three anonymous women standing against the power of a god-King set in motion a plan to rescue God’s people from slavery and despair. We explore the acts of release and acceptance that work together still today to move us toward the heart of Jesus.

Tonight we continue the conversation about God becoming flesh. We draw our attention to how Jesus’ humanity demanded and required that his flesh be vulnerable just like ours - that his body held within it the exact human needs, desires, and weaknesses as ours do outside of sin. Together we explore the implications of his humanness, it being the key to empathy and our salvation.

The gospel of John describes the way the Word (Jesus) became flesh and made his dwelling among us. Tonight we consider how this flesh took form in the womb of a pregnant Mary. We explore the very human dimensions of this story from the perspective of a new mom, and how they reveal the character of God and invite us to encounter his presence in fresh ways this Advent.

We begin the Advent season by taking a look at Hope and Light. Advent means “arrival” in Latin and has come to mean “waiting” in our contemporary understanding. At the time of Jesus’s birth, the wait was for rescue from oppression and darkness brought by a ruling Empire – they waited and hoped for Light to come. Today, we also are looking for that Hope and Light, in our trials and in our triumphs – Christmas brings us a great chance to connect to the same Savior that has always been the only One to bring true life.
