We begin our study of the book of the Bible called “James” by exploring who he was. James, the brother of Jesus, never mentions this fact, never leverages his relationship; instead, he identifies himself as a servant in the service of Jesus. We explore the implications of this for us nearly 2,000 years later as we seek to be servants of Jesus in our own right.

"Managing Critical People" Our Elder and Chairman of the Kindred Board, Trey Stubbs, asks us this week to consider what a biblical response to both getting criticized and giving criticism looks like. How does the Bible instruct us to treat one another - and how did Jesus himself respond in these kinds of situations? Trey gives us the opportunity to expand our understanding of what it looks like to Belong to Each Other as the people of God.

“Made On Purpose” - This week we hear from our worship pastor, Tommy Staudt. As we examine a mind-blowing scene from the book of Revelation more closely, we see that the same God who created the universe also created us, with both intention and purpose. If we know that same God made us for a reason - not only that, that He knows us and deeply loves us - how does that shape our identity as a beloved son or daughter of God?

Tonight we recap our study of the book of Ecclesiastes, which poses the question: where is the meaning in life when so many pursuits are ultimately meaningless? We find the answer in the small things (e.g. a good meal and time with family), and that life is better in community with God and with others.

Ecclesiastes has a lot to say, and tonight we are concentrating on the invitation that both the Teacher and Jesus offer us to focus on what is right in front of us today, leaving the worries of tomorrow to then. What does it mean to fear God, and how does a Jesus follower put it into practice? What does the Teacher ultimately want us to learn from all of the meaningful days we have left?

For the next three weeks we are going to look at the big themes and teaching of Ecclesiastes, led by this mysterious author called the Teacher. Tonight, we examine what it means to call everything “meaningless” and what God asks us to do in place of pursuing things that are not lasting or real – our choice is between an idealistic garden and fake plastic trees.
