In the new series "Kinds of Unbelief," Duane Sheriff explores the complex relationship between faith and unbelief. Using Mark 9 as a foundation, we examine the story of a father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus after the disciples failed to heal him. The father's famous words, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief" (Mark 9:24), illustrate how Christians often struggle with believing and doubting simultaneously.
Jesus responded to that father: "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes" (Mark 9:23). This scripture reminds us that the issue is never God's ability but rather our capacity to believe. When we simultaneously believe and doubt, they neutralize each other, preventing us from fully experiencing the power of God in our lives.
Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that "without faith it is impossible to please God." Faith is essential in our relationship with the Lord. Duane shares his journey of discovering these faith principles, admitting that he wasn't always taught how faith works or its fundamental importance in pleasing God. Faith isn't about our righteousness or works, but trusting in Jesus and His finished work on the cross.
