Walt Disney, the Beatles, Harry Potter, Martin Scorsese, Starbucks, Heinz, Wells Fargo, and Home Depot.  All these brands--and many others to boot--have been literally given the boot by evangelical families who placed them on the business end of boycott. 

In today's "What about?" episode of Kingdom Culture Conversations, a student asks, "Is it possible that we're now on the receiving end of the sword that we originally forged?"  In other words did evangelical boycotts establish the foundation upon which today's cancel culture is based?  In the 80's, 90's, and 00's, we were happy to short-change these businesses to get our way--but now that the sparks have jumped from the firepit and the prevailing direction of the cultural bonfire of vanities is moving in a uniquely different direction, could it be that we were the ones that originally lit the fire?

You will hear it said in today's Kingdom Culture Conversation:  "Lee Humes was a force of nature."  Lee was the founder of Deep Within Rehab, a self-supporting residential drug and alcohol rehab facility located in Peoria, Arizona.  But, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lord call Lee home to glory.  So, did Deep Within pack its bags and call it a day?

No.  Another force of nature took over.  Cindy Humes is Lee's widow and every bit the spiritual dynamo that her husband was.  Having grown up in dysfunctional homes, Cindy knows the pains of drug/alcohol addiction and abuse.  Further, she's reared her family within the same residence used by Deep Within.

And, today, Deep Within continues without missing a beat.

Today's "What about? Wednesday" episode of Kingdom Culture Conversation presents a unique twist on the recent and raging debate over the use of preferred pronouns.  A student asked the increasingly common question regarding preferred pronouns this way:  "I understand that Biblical worldview presents the truth that genders are not fluid.  But, if I have a non-Christian friend who doesn't hold to this perspective and asks me to use their preferred pronoun, what should I do?  On the one hand, I want to hold to my convictions about the truth of scripture.  On the other hand, if I don't use my friend's preferred pronoun, I might lose my friendship and the opportunity to share the love of Christ."

Tough question.  Today's episode provides tough answers.

Katy Hubbard is a Northwest Christian alumni, a current Crusader parent, and the Kids Ministry Director at the Anthem campus of Palmcroft Church.  She is also passionate about helping the K-5th grade students that she works with to understand the priority of God's word.

Sadly, recent statistics have pointed to a precipitous and alarming decline in Biblical literacy since 2009.   The resulting confusion about God's word has given rise to fallacies and confusion regarding the truths that scripture presents--a significant variable in undermining American culture--to the point where certain percentages of the world today believe that figures like Harry Potter and Superman are found in the Bible.

After a run of KCC episodes in which Mr. G has been absent as one of the two KCC hosts, there have been some expressions of curiosity:  "Hey, where's G?"

Chris Gardiners has been in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, completing training as a military chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve.  In today's Kingdom Culture Conversation, Geoff Brown catches up with G to hear about how that training is going, why chaplains are such an integral part of the military, and how the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is impacting the soldiers and chaplains in the U.S. Army.

In a chapel on the campus of Northwest Christian High School early in the spring of 2022, Melisha Alhambra opened by explaining that she was going to reveal the Gospel through TikTok.  From word one, everyone in the room was spellbound.

Immediately after that chapel, Geoff Brown and Melisha enjoyed a Kingdom Culture Conversation that did envelope TikTok--but so much more beside. 

Melisha, who is single, shared the compelling story of how God led her to adopt four children, essentially rescuing them from a desperate situation.  And, this was just the start of her journey--a moving journey that culminated not just with seeing the names of her newly adopted children changed, but her name was changed as well...

Just days before the start of his senior year at Northwest Christian High School, during Summer 2021, Luke Deal was enjoying a hike through the wilderness on the south end of Lake Tahoe.  As he and his family enjoyed the stunning mountain lake views, Luke was crossing a creek.

That's all he remembers.  The next subsequent memory he has is waking up in a hospital bed several days later with grim-faced doctors explaining that the prognosis was not good.

What his family remembers is Luke's slip and near-tragic fall over a 50-foot waterfall.  Then, they remember scrambling down the mountainside to see if he had survived, the 20-30 minutes it took for the first team of emergency responders to make it out to the remote area, and then placing him in a helicopter for a life-saving flight, alone, to an area hospital.

And, the story only gets more exciting from there.  This is a Kingdom Culture Conversation that you will be talking and thinking about for some time to come!

Today's Kingdom Culture Conversation is an uncomfortable one.  Very uncomfortable.  Why?  Because Austin Maranto doesn't mince words.

Austin graduated from Northwest Christian in 2016 and today works at Grand Canyon University.  He is also deeply involved in his church,  Apologia Church, in Mesa, Arizona.  Apologia meets on Sundays, like most churches, but in the afternoon.  But, unlike most churches, on Sunday mornings, its congregants can be found on the sidewalks around Planned Parenthood centers, providing "sidewalk counseling" to the men and women who are going into the Planned Parenthood to secure an abortion.

This is where Austin doesn't mince his words.  Abortion is murder and an affront to God.  Planned Parenthood is a murder mill.

Now, to be clear, as Austin provides sidewalk clarity, like any good apologist, he operates with both clarity and compassion.  But, he does speak the unfettered, unvarnished truth in love.

Thus, an uncomfortable Kingdom Culture Conversation.  "Uncomfortable" because Austin's clarity challenges the listener to survey their own convictions and perspectives on abortion.  Do we truly believe that abortion is the murder of a child?  If so, how has that understanding altered the course of my life?  Or, for reason of convenience, do we effectively ignore this thorny issue?  In so doing, are we complicit?  Ouch.
