Matthew Vines loves the church, cherishes God's word, and counts as precious the church communities to which he has and does belong.  In fact, if you were to run into Vines at your church this weekend, it's probable that you would have a conversation just like any other Sunday morning discussion you are likely to have.

That is, until you realize that Matthew Vines also founded and facilitates The Reformation Project, a ministry with the mission to encourage LGBTQ inclusion within the church.  That's where the conversation is bound to get very interesting.

Some studied estimates say that nearly 80% of members within the LGBTQ community have been or are invested in a church.  Today's [Worldview Contrasts] episode of Kingdom Culture Conversations moves beyond debate to a genuine discussion that goes deeper than "Your side talks about these verses and our side talks about these verses."  Matthew tells his story and talks about how and why The Reformation Project came to be.  He also affords us the privileged opportunity to understand, without necessarily agreeing with, his convictions on homosexuality and the Bible.  With honesty and transparency, we enjoy a two-part, robust discussion that identifies areas of consensus without either of us compromising our convictions.

In the process, we attempt to model both civil discourse and the brotherly love that Jesus advocates for in John 13:  "By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another."

The "Build Here, Build There" campaign is not your typical fundraising campaign.

Why?  We're sending the money that is sent to us...to someone else.

As part of the BHBT campaign, Northwest Christian has partnered with four different missions efforts:  The Sutton Project (an effort to support Phoenix's Isaac School District); the Hope Centers in San Juan, Costa Rica; the Kids Kingdom Orphanage and Church in Sonora, Mexico; the City of Joy Christian School in Rwanda, Africa.  A portion of the money that comes in to improve the campus at Northwest Christian is also going to improve and build facilities in these remote campuses.

In addition, during the summer of 2023, three teams of Northwest Christian faculty and students are headed out to support these ministries--headed to Costa Rica, Mexico, and Rwanda.  In today's Kingdom Culture Conversation, we get to hear from two faculty members and one student--all of who are helping to lead these trips.

And, we get to ask:  What is the ROI, or even the prudence, in sending our students and money to these places?  Their answers will surprise you!

We started with Henry Purcell, Arvo Part, Benjamin Britton, and Jean Christian Sibelius.

We ended with The Beatles, Queen, Metallica, Pink Floyd, and Motley Crue.

Uh oh.  I don't think that this is going to be your "typical" Kingdom Culture Conversation.  Today, we're going a little deeper.

But, what would you expect when our guest has a doctorate in choral studies from Yale University?

Dr. McNeil is the choral director from Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado, very near to Denver.  Recently, McNeil's choir graced all three chapels at Northwest Christian, demonstrating tremendous vocal prowess.  But, that was just the beginning.  The CCU students spent the day in workshops with NCS choral students and, while they did, we discussed the things that you're never supposed to discuss with anyone:   your politics, your religion, and your opinions on the merits of Motley Crue.

It was more than just clickbait.

I'm on Google and doing my research on Justin Hamilton who shared last week at our men's prayer breakfast and who will be speaking in high school chapel this week.

The first link that comes up is a video titled, "What I recently learned from a moral failure with another woman."

Uh oh.  Did we invite the wrong guy?  Turns out we didn't.  Upon clicking on the video, Justin delivered a powerful message about the nature of morality and failure--it just wasn't what I thought.  But, it drew me down the rabbit hole into hours of videos, recorded sermons, and blog posts that were priceless.

This guy is going to grab your attention and not let go!

Justin Hamilton is the senior pastor of Legacy Church in Chandler, Arizona--a faith family that came together just ten weeks ago.  Prior to that, he'd served as the youth pastor at Impact Church in Scottsdale, Arizona.

On February 8, 2023, following a routine chapel service at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, a handful of students stayed behind and continued to enjoy a time of praise and worship.  Asbury President Kevin Brown sent out a brief two-sentence email to the faculty and student body: "There's worship happening in Hughes Auditorium.  All are welcome to join." 

Within a week, that small gathering had broadened to include as many as 15,000 visitors per day.

What in the world happened?  What is "revival"?  How can we know if an event of this nature is God's design or man's design?  And, should that even matter? 

Today, STR apologist Robby Lashua will help us sort through these tough questions...

"It's too expensive."

These, and more, represent the most common objections to Christian education.  Are they legitimate?  Is there good reason to keep some students in government-run schools and public education?

Today's conversation is a tough one but the stakes--our children and the future of the Church--are high.  To answer these questions, we welcome Jeff Keaton, the founder, president, and CEO of Renewanation.  Formerly a pastor who became frustrated watching students fall away from the faith of their parents, Keaton's life work has become uniting church, home, and school to baptize students in truth and Biblical worldview.

Over the course of three decades, Dawna Underwood has seen her job grow and change as she served within Northwest Christian School, a school that was also experienced growth and change.  As a result, she has been the tip-of-the-spear within many of the initiatives that kept Northwest Christian on the leading edge of progress.

Underwood came to NCS from Christian Unified in San Diego and started as a classroom teacher.  In time, she became the school's first Director of Curriculum and Instruction, eventually becoming the Elementary Principal and Early Education Director.

But, during that time, aside from her decades-long commitment to NCS, she also served as a member of the ACSI Rocky Mountain Regional Accreditation Commission, helping to steer quality within Christian schools throughout the western United States.  In fact, her commitment to quality Christian ed has taken her around the globe, most recently to the City of Joy Christian School in Rwanda, Africa.

As Underwood prepares for retirement from day-to-day operations within Christian schools, today we continue a multi-day conversation with her as she looks back and reflects on all that she has seen the Lord accomplish through her hands.

During the summer of 2023, Eric Dowdle will take the reins of the Northwest Christian School elementary program from Dawna Underwood.  Underwood, who is preparing to retire after 32 years of service to NCS and 45 total years within Christian education, served alongside Dowdle for over a decade as part of ACSI Rocky Mountain Regional Accreditation Commission. 

For the last few years, Dowdle has served as Deputy Headmaster at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy in Tucson, Arizona.  Prior to that, for nearly two decades, Dowdle was Head of School for Tucson's Casas Christian.

In today's episode, we'll spend some time conversing with Eric about the trajectory of his career, the passion he derives from keeping Christ central in education, and the journey that has brought him to Northwest Christian.
