“God eternally exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God , and there is one God.” – Wayne Grudem
Three components of the definition:
1. God, in his very being, has always existed as more than one person.
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
2. Each member of the trinity is fully God. So all of the attributes of God are found in each.
6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
3. Scripture is very clear that there is one and only one God, not three .
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
“God eternally exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God.”
What the trinity teaches us about mankind (created in the image of God):
1. We were created by God to enjoy fellowship and community with each other.
2. As the trinity displays, relationships are at their best when they demonstrate unity while recognizing and honoring the diversity of roles.
3. Authority and submission are eternal and godly concepts, not a consequence of the Fall.
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
