Romans 12:1–8 NASB95PARA 1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
Review:
Believers are called to live transformed lives as a result of having their minds renewed by the Spirit of God. (Romans 12:2)
EVIDENCE of a renewed mind is the ability to accurately evaluate oneself with HUMILITY. That is what Paul calls possessing sober judgment. (Romans 12:3)
Why should we soberly think about ourselves?
Reason #1:
God is the one who has given us the FAITH to be saved and the FAITH to exercise the gifts He’s given us. Everything starts and ends with God.
Ephesians 2:8–10 NASB95PARA 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
1 Corinthians 4:7 NASB95PARA 7 For who regards you as superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
Reason #2:
Every believer is a MEMBER of the body of Christ with a unique FUNCTION for the benefit of the whole. Every member is important!
1 Corinthians 12:17–18 NASB95PARA 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
1 Corinthians 12:27 NASB95PARA 27 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.
None of the members can SURVIVE without the HEAD, who is Christ.
Colossians 1:18 NASB95PARA 18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.
Key Takeaway:
We can't adopt an INDIVIDUALISTIC approach to spiritual transformation and expect to grow.
The Seven Motivational Gifts:
1. Prophecy - sharing a message from God (not necessarily PREDICTING the FUTURE).
2. Service - general MINISTRY; work Christians do on BEHALF of others for God’s glory.
3. Teach - the ability to CLEARLY instruct others on the truths of the Word.
4. Exhortation - Comforting and ENCOURAGING other believers to live out the truth of the Word.
5. Giving - someone gifted with the ability to give or contribute to others SACRIFICIALLY.
6. Leadership - to stand before others; to GUIDE.
7. Mercy - to show COMPASSION, to extend help.
Why are these gifts listed?
The motivational gifts are often OVERLOOKED by the church in favor of the sign or speaking gifts, and their ABSENCE always WEAKENS the body.
