Kingston Live Podcast

Just a quick ferry ride from downtown Kingston is the magical—and somewhat mystifying— community of Wolfe Island, which has been a hive of cultural activity over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnny and Rob catch up with Wolfe Island Records co-founder and producer, Hugh Christopher Brown, and award-winning author and poet, Steven Heighton, on his debut album, The Devil's Share, and the resurrection of the Hotel on Wolfe Island as a prominent live music venue.

For some artists, the COVID-19 pandemic meant an end to not just performing their music, but to the creative act of making music together. For The Gertrudes, however, the social distance and resulting social issues reignited the collective's spark of creativity. The result is a new full-length album set for release in November 2021 on Wolfe Island Records. Hosts Riley and Sideshow visit The Gertrudes' Kingston rehearsal space for an in depth discussion about their inspiration, their creative process, and their new release, Emergency to Emergency.

At the outset of the pandemic—a year after her finalist performance at the YGK Emerging Musician Competition showcase with musical partner, Michael Broadhead—Kingston jazz-folk artist, Savannah Shea, set music aside. After a period of personal reflection and personal relationships, Shea returned to music in 2021, releasing the stripped-down EP, The Day Of, and most recently, a three-song EP, Winter Magnolia, that exposes her expanded sonic palette. Hosts Johnny and Reid join Savannah Shea in Kingston's Lake Ontario Park for an outdoor interview covering everything from bucket lists and life balance to personal growth and performing live music once again, plus an intimate performance of a brand new, untitled song.

Recording and releasing two singles and an exceptional eponymous EP over just 8 months, Johnny and Reid catch up with lead vocalist, Kimaya Tegtmeyer, and guitarist, Max Tinline, to discuss their astonishing level of artistic output, their forthcoming full-length album, and give a listen to their brand new single, "Remedy."

We want answers!

So, we started the Kingston Live podcast, our monthly investigation that aims to answer these questions through live interviews with the industry insiders, bands and artists who make up the vibrant and thriving music scene here in Canada's First Capital of Music.
