  • Atlantic football ready to tackle a lot of changes in 2021
The Atlantic Trojan football team is full of fresh faces for the 2021 season. Joe Brummer was promoted to take over the Head Coach role following the resignation of Mike McDermott so the coaching staff is a bit different. On the field will look pretty fresh as well with the Trojans replacing 17 starters from last season. Those changes also combine with a move back up to Class 3A from 2A due to class restructuring in the state.

Despite all those changes the Trojans still hope to build off a very successful 2020 campaign that saw them finish with a record of 7-2 and an appearance in the 2A Playoffs. Coach Brummer said some of the terminology will stay the same and much of the previous staff returns to bring some continuity.

Coach Brummer has been pleased with a effort that has been showed in the offseason and early in practice. He feels like there are a number of guys that should be ready to step up into their new, larger roles.

The Trojans were able to mix things up a bit with the pass and the run last year. Having two quarterbacks with experience back in the rotation will be a big plus. Garrett McLaren threw for 593 yards and 9 touchdowns with just 2 interceptions. Caden Andersen threw for 380 yards with 1 touchdown and 6 interceptions. Coach Brummer said having two quick guys back there should give them some options on offense.

Atlantic will play in Class 3A District 6 with ADM, Creston, Harlan, Knoxville, and Saydel this year. The Trojans will start the year with non-district matchups with Glenwood, Kuemper Catholic, and Shenandoah. You can catch a glimpse of the Trojans this Friday as they host a scrimmage against Carroll. The freshman will scrimmage at 6:00 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:00 p.m.

Listen to the full preseason interview with Coach Brummer below. We'll catch up with Coach every week during the season on Trojan Preview that airs Friday afternoons at 4:45 p.m.

  • Martens wins 63rd Annual Tournament of Champions
Ross Martens saved the best round of the weekend for last and took the title at the 63rd Annual Tournament of Champions at Atlantic Golf and Country Club on Sunday. Martens shot a final round 66 on Sunday, which matched the best round of all golfers through the three day event. He began the day at even par for his first two rounds and was one shot behind leader Andrew Martin. His 66 brought the weekend total to -3, 204, which ended up 4 shots better than Runner-Up Zach Christianson from the Atlantic Golf and Country Club.

Ross Martens, 2021 Championship Division Champion

Martens opened the round with a bogey but quickly turned things around after that. He used a big stretch of 4 under through five holes to take command of the lead. He birdied 7, 8, 10, and 11 and just edged out a another birdie attempt on 9 to make his strong run. He would later survive a little trouble on the 13th. Christianson had driven the green and Ross' second shot ended up short left. He chipped up and then was able to sink a 13 foot par putt to save the hole. Christianson then lipped out on a birdie attempt and ultimately no movement came to the leaderboard. Martens said he was thankful for all of the support, loves playing in the tournament, and always wanted to win it. His parent were able to walk the entire round with him and his father was on the bag.

The Senior Division needed a playoff to decide the winner. Last year's champ Ron Peterson got caught on the back nine by Del Miller and they both finished at +8 for the weekend. Both players parred the first playoff hole. Miller then nearly chipped in for birdie on the second and tapped in for a par. Peterson ended up with a bogey after missing his putt and Miller secured the win. It's the fourth time Miller has grabbed the senior title.

Rick Thompson, 2021 Super Senior Division Champion

The Super Senior Division was won for the second year in a row by Rick Thompson. He shot a stellar round of 67 on Sunday to grab the win by one stroke over another Past Champion in John Willmore. Thompson finished the weekend with a +7, 214 total.

Thanks to all the tournament leaders, volunteers, and Atlantic Golf and Country Club staff for another wonderful tournament and helping us execute our live coverage.
