  • Southwest Valley looking to rebound against Griswold
The (0-1) Southwest Valley Girls basketball team are looking to win the second game of their young season, after a 60-34 loss to Shenandoah. It was a contest that saw Southwest Valley down 36-15 at half and low percentage shots from across the floor. Head Coach of the Timberwolves Mike Cormack noted the inexperience and lack of size was a major reason why his team struggled against a lengthier Fillies squad.

Even with a loss, the Timberwolves had a few positive takeaways from Tuesday's game. Players like Hailey Randall who scored 16 points, shot 54% from the field, and went 2-4 from behind the arc. Mackenzie Fast also contributed with 7 boards and 11 points. The offensive effort from Tuesday night stood out to Coach Cormack.

Now the Timberwolves are gearing for a familiar foe they've scrimmaged before in this past offseason. The Griswold Tigers will start the season by looking to a few familiar faces like Seniors Karly Millikan and Madison Rush. Millikan had 147 rebounds, 23 steals, and 5 blocks in her sophomore campaign, but sat out her junior year due to an injury. Rush last year had 13 completed 3-pointers, 25 rebounds, with 7 assists, and 7 steals. Coach Cormack knows that even though Griswold only won two games a season ago, that this is a team he cannot overlook.

A key for the Timberwolves to come away with a win on the road Thursday night is to emphasize outside shooting. Southwest Valley shot 30% on their three pointers with only 13 attempts. Coach Cormack would also like to see his team continue to build on their confidence, because he knows they can compete with any team in the state.

  • Exira-EHK Basketball staying optimistic with “Senior Heavy” Team
The Exira-EHK Spartans are preparing for another basketball season with their new Head Coach and alumnus Tony Santisteban. The Spartans played sharp basketball a season ago going 19-5 and made it to the 1A-8 Semifinal before being knocked out by West Harrison 71-52. Exira-EHK's offense was fast paced last year averaging 66 points per game and accurate from anywhere on the court going 52 percent on their field goals. One fact of the 2023 Spartan Squad that Coach Santisteban is counting on to keep his team in the top of the Rolling Valley Conference is his senior heavy team and the leadership that brings.

A few members of the senior heavy class that contributed well last year were Cash Emgarten and Aiden Flathers. Emgarten started all 24 games last year and averaged 15.2 points per game. Flathers also had an offensive averaging 11.3 points per game and over 74 assists. Both have impressed Coach Santisteban with their work effort in the offseason.

  • Riverside Boys Basketball Eager for Season Opener
The Riverside boys' basketball team is looking forward to improving off of their 2022-23 season where the Bulldogs finished the season just 8-14 and 5-11 in conference play. The Bulldogs were defeated in the first round of Class 1A Region 8 tournament 53-50 vs a tough Woodbine team. The Bulldogs and Head Coach Nichoals Kroon are wanting to get back to playing in the regional championship game again for the first time in four seasons. And for the team the push to get there started this offseason when the Bulldogs had their best offseason under Coach Kroon and he said it shows him how dedicated the kids are to get better on their skill work and getting back to winning basketball games.

The Bulldogs were busy this offseason as the team played about 15 games this summer at different places. This was a big offseason for the Bulldogs losing four key players and will be relying on some freshman and sophomores to help out and rely on in crucial moments and minutes in the game. Coach Kroon said it was good to play so much this summer to help build team chemistry and see how the young guys looked going up against varsity basketball teams.

As far as who will be stepping into the remainder of the Bulldogs starting lineup and bench rotation is still up for grabs said Coach Kroon. In years past Riverside has been a team that has typically played six or maybe seven guys total but Coach Kroon believes this one of the deeper teams he has seen at Riverside and thinks that depth will really help the Bulldogs this season.

With the Bulldogs losing some of their size down low the Bulldogs will look to use speed and quickness to their advantage this season especially on the defensive end of the floor. Coach Kroon wants to lead his team slowly with several young guys playing big minutes he doesn't want to give them too much too early. Coach Kroon said as the season goes on he will throw more junk defenses into the system and see what his young team can handle.
