  • ACGC looking to advance to State Semi-Finals
The ACGC have had a perfect season up to this point. The Chargers advanced into the quarterfinals this week by defeating Lynville-Sully 29-8 last Friday night. The Chargers got off to a slow start on the cold and windy Friday evening but were able to push 15 points onto the board in the third quarter to push their lead to 29-0 before Lynville-Sully then scored late to avoid being shutout. The Chargers got contributions from every player who stepped on the field. The Chargers were led by the rushing attack of Mike Fuller who had 160 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, Anthany Solorzano who had 110 yards on 17 carries, and Jathan South who had 60 yards but punched in two touchdowns. The Chargers total for the game had 60 carries, 360 yards, and 4 touchdowns. This is nothing new for the Chargers as they have just 4 total pass attempts in their last 4 games played. Head Coach Cody Matthewson credits the offensive line and receivers for buying into the system that they play and all 11 guys on the field doing their job.

Coach Matthewson was very happy with how his team came out and played and blocking out some of the outside noise that has started around this Chargers team the deeper they continue to advance.

Now that the Chargers are onto the quarterfinals this week where they will play the 10-0 Madrid Tigers in a heavy weight fight to advance to the semi-final held at the UNI dome. This match is a bit close and personal for Head Coach Cody Matthewson as his dad coached at Madrid for 23 years, he played his high school ball for the Tigers and says he knows everything about this Tigers team.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/ACGC-Playoffs-Clip-3.mp3

Both the Chargers and the Tigers play very similar styles of football wanting to pound the run game and trying to avoid throwing the football. The Chargers have just 4 passes over their last 4 games and the Tigers have just 10 pass attempts over their last four games. This is going to be a game where it comes down to the very end in a tough physical battle and Coach Matthewson knows that every yard will matter in this heavy weight fight.

With so much on the line Friday night this will be one of the best games around the State of Iowa. Only one of these teams can move on to the semifinals at the UNI dome next week and more than likely this game will come down to the final possession of the night. The Chargers and Tigers kick off at 7:00pm at the Guthrie Center with the pregame show starting at 6:00pm here on KJAN.

  • “Do what you do Best” is CAM’s key for Friday night’s matchup
The (10-0) CAM Cougars will face off against the (9-1) Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears Thursday night in Algona for a trip to the UNI-Dome. The cougars are coming off a nail biting 36-34 victory over West Bend-Mallard last Friday. It was a game where CAM found themselves down 28-14 at halftime and needed some heroic play in the second half to pull off the come from behind victory.

For Head Coach Barry Bower the win showed the grit and mental toughness his team possess.

Quarterback Chase Spieker had a strong performance going 15-26 in the pocket, with 238 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Spieker's legs ran the ball 27 times for 105 yards, and 3 scores. His top target on the night was Jack Follman who had 7 grabs, 132 receiving yards, and Spieker's only two touchdowns through the air.

The connection they had last Friday night was not new to Coach Bower. He commented on the history that Follmann and Spieker share.

Now the Cougars have a chance to go back to the UNI-Dome with one more win. To advance, they will have to beat an equally tough Bishop Garrigan team.

When preparing for Thursday's match up, Coach Bower noticed the execution, athleticism, and tenacity from the Golden Bears. Including the sharp play from their sophomore quarterback Tate Foertsch.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/CAM-Coach-Bower-on-Bishop-Garrigan.mp3

Bishop Garrigan is coming off an emotional 21-18 win as well, with an upset against the defending 8-Player State champions Remsen St. Mary's.

As Coach Bower noted, Tate Foertsch has been impressive this year. Foertsch is 66-114 with 1030 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Next to him in the backfield is Caden Roethler who has 142 carries, 963 yards, and 17 rushing touchdowns.

To get a win on the road this Thursday November 2nd, Coach Bower wants his team to play focused and relaxed.

  • West Bend-Mallard relying on Work Ethic to compete with CAM
The (7-2) West Bend-Mallard Wolverines face the undefeated CAM Cougars Friday night in the second round of 8 player playoffs. The road for West-Bend Mallard has seen a few stumbles losing to Bishop Garrigan 36-31 and Remsen St. Marys 34-18. Since those two losses, the Wolverines have been on a six-game winning streak. Their last content was a well-earned 64-26 victory over Riceville. One of the major keys for West Bend-Mallard's success is the toughness instilled in all of the players from Head Coach Tony Wirtz.

Another key component which has tremendously helped the Wolverines score through their opponents is the athleticism of senior quarterback Landon Montag. Montag in the pocket plays well going for 38-75, 792 yards, 11 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. His legs on the other hand are deadly considering he's had 163 carries, 1346 rushing yards, 8.3 yards per carry, and 26 touchdowns. Coach Wirtz takes pride in his quarterbacks' approach to the game.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/WBM-Landon-QB.mp3

Still having such a versatile quarterback is not a big enough reason for Coach Wirtz to take this matchup lightly. CAM has continually dominated teams, only allowing one opponent to score at least 20 points all year. The Cougar defense has forced over 30 turnovers and remains quick with every snap. The pose a tough challenge to this Wolverines team and Coach Wirtz is candid about it.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/WBM-on-CAM.mp3

Facing an undefeated opponent in their own house during the playoffs is a stout challenge to face. Yet, the Wolverines still have hope with the effort and work they've put in all season.

  • CAM Cougars focused for Friday’s matchup against West Bend-Mallard
The (9-0) CAM Cougars are preparing for the second round of 8-player playoffs after an overpowering 75-12 win against Southeast Warren. It was a game that saw over 400 yards of total offense for the Cougars, a 4+ turnover margin for CAM, and a kickoff return for a touchdown. CAM Quarterback Chase Spieker was 10-13 for 209 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. Spieker also scrambled for 91 yards and 3 scores. The run game was assisted by Brody Paulsen with 9 carries, 82 yards, and one touchdown.

Everything was clicking for the Cougars last Friday and Head Coach Barry Bower was pleased with the sharp efficiency by his team.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/CAM-offense-being-effecient.mp3

Now a week later and the competition is only getting tougher for Coach Bower and his CAM squad. They face off against a (7-2) West Bend-Mallard Wolverines team who are also coming off an impressive 64-26 win against Riceville.

One of the major keys for the Wolverines is their deadly duo in the backfield of quarterback Landon Montag and Cole Fehr who combined have over 2100 rushing yards. Coach Bower knows they will be a tough test for the Cougars.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/CAM-2100-rushing-yards.mp3

The Wolverines offense relies on their up-tempo style to catch defenses off guard and get in as many plays as possible. The results have been impressive, with the West Bend-Mallard offense averaging 66 points in their last four games. Preparing for this type of offense has been a focus for CAM.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/West-Bend-Maallard-quick-offense.mp3

Being undefeated would give most programs an abundance of confidence and have them look past opponents. However, Coach Bower has just one message for his successful Cougar team. He wants them to take it one day at a time because you never know when it could be your last game.

    https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/CAM-one-day-at-a-time.mp3

Friday's matchup will be covered by KJAN with the pregame starting at 6:30pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm.
