Meet Nkululeko Biyana, aka F_arK That Guy on bass, Ndzwakazi Ntikinca-Biyana, aka LikwidSkillz on vocals and synths and Khetiwe Mdlalose-Kubeka, aka Lock Up Your Daughters (LUYD) on drums who make up the avant-garde trio known as The Cooligans.
The Molotov cocktail, according to Texx in the City, defies the norms of genre with its retro vibe and cutting-edge sound. The group, who call themselves “the real business man,” combines electronic drums, synth, and bass sounds recorded digitally with analogue instruments.
In 2020, the Showmax web series “Working Wives” from Zimbabwe used one of their songs named “Impotent Potency.” That same year, with support from Concerts SA, the Cooligans streamed their first VR 360 concert ever.
In 2021, the band released its first song, titled “Umkhathi,” to critical acclaim. Publications as diverse as Texx in the City, Itchy Silk, and Krakow Music covered the single. They made history by becoming the first band ever to perform live on Catch 22 Jams, a contemporary jazz slot on UK radio station Wycombe FM. They also placed in the top 3 at the Nova Inspires Joburg Day band search competition.
The Cooligans are a great example of a free art movement that wants to show not only how talented people can be, but also how much they can say about themselves through music.
Listen to The Cooligans’ debut EP, Death of the Genre Part 1, released with Electromode, on 11/11/22. Keep an eye out for the sequel coming later this year
