A south Reno man has the first case of Hantavirus reported in Washoe County since 2006.

A Reno man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of beating a homeless shelter employee and breaking the victim’s jaw. 36-year-old Christopher Stewart Woodstone was found guilty after a two-day trial in Washoe District Court. Woodstone was arrested in December 2016 by the Reno Police Department after an investigation into a battery that took place at the Community Assistance Center’s Record Street family shelter. Woodstone had been asked to leave the family shelter after staff received disturbing complaints about him. When a male staff member told Woodstone to leave, he responded by punching the victim in the face, which resulted in a broken jaw. Woodstone was sentenced as an habitual criminal.

Governor Brian Sandoval is asking Senate Leaders to drop the Cassidy-Graham-Heller repeal and replace bill. In a letter to senate leadership, the Governor asked them to focus on a bipartisan effort instead. The Governors statement says in part, "“I know that Senator Heller is working in the best interest of the state and I appreciate the intended flexibility created in the Graham-Cassidy-Heller amendment which would distribute healthcare funding via block grants." But he also says the framework authored by bipartisan Governors is the best path to improve the healthcare system.

A Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputy's quick response to a drowned baby call, is being credited for saving the baby’s life. Deputies were dispatched to 8th Avenue in Sun Valley at approximately 12:54 p.m. on Monday, September 11th. Deputy Natasha Rickey arrived on scene within 35 seconds. Deputy Rickey rushed into the residence where she immediately began life-saving measures on a one-year-old boy who had been found unresponsive in a bathtub. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and REMSA crews arrived moments later. The infant was rushed to Renown Medical Center and regained consciousness on the way to the hospital. The boy was released from the hospital later that week.

Reno Police say they've arrested four suspects following two attempted robberies and a shooting in downtown Reno this (Tuesday) afternoon. They say at about 2:30 officers were called to the area of First Street and Center Street to the report of a shooting. They found a victim suffering from a single gunshot wound, believed not to be life-threatening. The victim and witnesses gave a description of four persons running from the scene. Police say they found four suspects a short time later, and, after a short pursuit, all four were captured and arrested. A firearm, believed to have been used in the shooting was also located. Police say that during this investigation officers were called to a hotel on North Virginina Street where it was determined the same four suspects were believed to have attempted another robbery. Investigators say video evidence from both cases and subsequent interviews confirmed the suspects' involvement in these incidents. Eighteen year old Lamont Caldwell and three juveniles have been charged with a variety of crimes including Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery and Attempted Armed Robbery.

Firefighters have stopped progress of the Woodchuck Fire burning in West Reno, and northeast of the Hunter Creek Trailhead. It's estimated the fire has burned some 60 acres and is now 25 percent contained. Washoe County was urging people in west Reno to be ready to evacuate to Billinghurst Middle School, just in cause things got worse. Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochrane says wind was the big challenge as they try to get the Woodchuck Fire, under control.

The Washoe County Health District will conduct its final aerial abatement operation of the 2017 mosquito season on September 20 and 21 beginning at 6:30 am in the North Valleys area. Helicopter applications of Vectolex larvicide will be applied to over 2,500 acres of wetlands from Silver Lake to Washoe Lake, including areas surrounding Swan Lake and Lemmon Valley, Kiley Ranch and Spanish Springs, Rosewood Lakes, Butler Ranch, South Meadows, Damonte Ranch, and Washoe Valley. Health officials say this is necessary, because of the continued reporting of positive human and animal West Nile Virus cases.
