A Reno man was among six people who spent eight months in a research habitat designed to replicate as closely as possible conditions on the planet Mars. Ansley Barnard, an engineer from Reno, joined five others in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation . . . referred to as the HI-SEAS mission, near the Mauna Loa (Mu-wah-nah lowa) volcano. They entered the specially designed habitat in January and exited last month. The conditions in the dome were designed to test how humans might react to living in isolated and confined conditions for an extended period of time. The team ate only food that was freeze-dried or that would be stable on a long-duration spaceflight. Water and electricity were extremely limited . . . not just for drinking, but for showering and other uses. They left the habitat once a week to conduct field studies on foot wearing suits similar to those being designed for astronauts on a Mars excursion.

Thirty-nine of those 51 businesses passed. Twenty-four of them were part of the monthly Wine Walk, but, police say, only one of those, Noble Pie Parlor, served any of the underage volunteers alcohol.

A Reno man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. 42-year-old Douglas Reeves was arrested by detectives with the Repeat Offender program outside his Reno apartment after locating him in possession of a stolen truck. The D-A's office sought habitual criminal status due to Reeves' 20-year criminal history that included multiple theft and forgery charges. The habitual designation enhanced the sentence over the normal term of 1 to 5 years for possession of a stolen vehicle, and also means that Reeves will serve a minimum of 5 years before eligible for parole.
