A wintry storm arriving three weeks into spring is delivering widespread rain and snow to parts of Nevada and Northern California. The storm brought howling winds to the top of the Sierra Nevada on Thursday as it headed in from the Pacific Ocean. According to the National Weather Service, gusts up to 115 mph ripped across a few ridges in the Lake Tahoe area, while blasts up to 55 mph hit the Tahoe Basin and some areas north and south. Forecasters upgraded a winter storm watch to a warning for heavy, wet snow, effective from midnight Thursday to 5 a.m. Saturday along the eastern Sierra. A flood watch is in effect for the Reno area through Saturday morning.

With an atmospheric river arriving again in western Nevada and the Sierra, the city of Reno is advising people to be prepared. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the greater Reno area through Saturday morning. The city of Reno says its public works crews are on standby. A wind advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. tonight. The city of Reno does have sandbag locations available. Those locations include: The Public Works Corporation Yard at 1640 E. Commercial Row, the Nevada Peace Officers Memorial at Idlewild Park, and at the old Moana Swimming Pool location at 240 West Moana Lane.
