Nevada’s unemployment rate showed the largest decline nationwide, for year-over-year February unemployment. According to the federal labor department, the state went from a 6.1 percent unemployment rate in February 2016 to a 4.9 percent rate in February 2017. The state had not seen an unemployment rate under five percent since November 2007.

The City of Reno is continuing emergency flood-protection measures for the industrial buildings that surround Silver Lake in the Stead area. The City of Reno is deploying "HESCO" barriers in anticipation of snowmelt runoff from Peavine Mountain within the West Lemmon Valley watershed, which feeds Silver Lake. These protection measures will assist in preventing flooding of Moya Boulevard and also keep vital transportation corridors open and accessible to the public. The water-storage capacity at Silver Lake is enhanced by a large, nearby water detention basin that was created by warehouse developers during the building process. The detention basin is designed to hold additional runoff and prevent Silver Lake from overflowing. The detention basin is located east of Moya Boulevard and south of Echo Avenue. The barriers are expected to be completed in about nine days.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board says revenue from Nevada casinos was down nearly four-point-five percent in February compared with February of 20-16. The board today (Tuesday) announced that casinos won 945-point-six million dollars from gamblers last month. Substantially more than 57 percent of that, 542-million dollars, was on the Las Vegas Strip where winnings declined five percent from February 20-15 to February of this year. Winnings at casinos in downtown Las Vegas were up two-point-two percent. Meantime, winnings were down in Reno by six-point-seven percent to 45-million dollars. Winnings were down six-point-nine percent on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe to 15-million dollars.

Nevada Democrats are proposing legislation that would give state employees the ability to organize and to negotiate working conditions. Currently some workers paid by local governments including teachers and police can unionize. However, Nevada is among more than 28 states that prohibit state workers from collective bargaining. Senate Bill 486 would allow those employees to join together and negotiate wages, overtime, vacation days and leave provisions. However, if approved it could face a veto on the desk of Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval.
