The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says the Little Valley Fire was caused by embers from the Little Valley Prescribed Burn which took place the week of October 3. Interim director Kay Scherer has ordered an in-depth review of that fire. 23 homes and 17 outbuildings, like barns and sheds were lost. In all, it burned over 22-hundred acres, and cost 5.8 million dollars to fight.

The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says the Little Valley Fire was caused by an escape from the Little Valley Prescribed Fire," which took place the week of October 3.

Someone has been trying to damage most of the traffic signs and signals in the rural community of Smith Valley. Lyon County law enforcement and state transportation officials say they began getting reports in late September of traffic signs and lights being shot out with a shotgun. N-DOT says in all 28 signs and five traffic lights were damaged -- a significant fraction of the total in this rural community. The cost of replacing them will top $13,000 just for the signs and lights. N-DOT has replaced signs that were unreadable. Anyone with information is asked to call Secret Witness at 322-4900.

The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has determined that the Little Valley Fire was caused by fire from a prescribed burn. The Department's report says the prescribed burn ended October 7th and the Little Valley Fire started October 14th about 15 feet to 20 feet from the edge of the prescribed burn. Winds at the time of the fire were measured at 16 to 20 mph out of the west with wind gusts to 80 mph. Fire investigators checked out the prescribed burn on October 14th and found several areas with re-ignited dead fuels and a still-hot stump hole. They reported they also found fresh seedlings that appeared to be freshly burned. The place where the fire started is downwind from the prescribed burn.

As we've previously reported, the state of Nevada and two counties could end up paying well over $100,000 in legal costs, as they continue to fight two tribes over alleged violations of the U.S. Voting Rights Act. Federal judge Miranda Du ordered Washoe and Mineral counties to establish new early voting and Election Day voting sites, on two Paiute reservations after concluding Native Americans were being denied equal access to the polls. Nine more tribes followed that ruling with similar requests last week in federal court in Reno. Lawyers for the Pyramid Lake and Walker River Paiute tribes also filed a request for $117,000 in legal fees and expenses incurred to date.

That's 10 times as much as it would have cost to set up the polling stations in the first place . . . without a lawsuit.
