A decision by the Nevada Public Utilities Commission could restore older, more favorable rates to about 32,000 customers who installed or applied for a rooftop solar system before this year. The Nevada PUC is scheduled to vote today on a settlement between NV Energy, SolarCity, the state Bureau of Consumer Protection and the commission's staff. Customers who signed up before a rate hike took effect this year would be "grandfathered" into lower rates for 20 years. Commissioners raised rates for rooftop solar customers this year, saying it corrected a subsidy that non-solar customers were paying for those who had panels.

Fire crews are working the Owens River Fire, estimated to be 500 acres burning in sagebrush and Jeffrey Pine.

A Friday night crash on westbound I-80 between Robb & McCarran resulted in the deaths of two people in a car that was stopped on the side of the road.

Fire crews are responding to the Owens River Fire burning north of the Owens River Road near Clark Canyon. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire is estimated to be 4,500 acres with 10% containment. The Mono County Health Department has issued a stage 2 air pollution health advisory. Crews are focusing their efforts along the Owens River Road to protect nearby private developments and ranches. The Big Springs Campground, popular climbing area Clark Canyon, and nearby ranches and developments have been evacuated. The cause of the fire is under investigation, though appears to be human-caused.

The U.S. Forest Service reports several small fires near Sierra Springs Road in eastern Plumas County, were quickly contained by firefighters early Saturday evening. The three fires broke out south of Highway 70 on private land and were contained to about 5 acres. Air support, including a federal helicopter & air attack plane and a Cal Fire air tanker, were ordered from the Grass Valley Air Attack Base. Although Highway 70 was closed in both directions for about an hour, travelers were quickly rerouted to nearby roads. The cause of the fires is yet to be determined.

Authorities are not yet releasing the names of the two people killed in an Interstate 80 crash in west Reno on Friday night. The alleged driver of the Ford pickup that crashed into the back end of the disabled car near the McCarran Boulevard interchange remained jailed as of this morning. 27 year old Justin Kent Freund was booked on suspicion of two counts of vehicular manslaughter, two counts of felony driving under the influence and a felony count of attempting to leave the scene of an accident. 27 year old Matthew Sredy was allegedly a passenger in Freund’s vehicle who left the crash scene. He has been released from jail.The two people in the Pontiac were taken to Renown, where they were pronounced dead.
