Six correctional officers had to receive medical attention after being attacked by an inmate. 36-year-old Desmond Walls stabbed one High Desert State Prison guard on his cheek, face, head and hand with an inmate-made weapon while causing abrasions, swelling and in one case - a bite wound - on the other five officers. Walls is serving a 21-year sentence for burglary and robbery with a firearm in Riverside County. He also was taken to a hospital for treatment. The remote Northern California prison is in Susanville and houses about 3,700 inmates.
