This episode, in the doctrine of the final judgment, we have the part of the creed that is most actively avoided by the western Church. But you will find descriptions of God's judgment all over the place in the bible and, perhaps surprisingly, his judgment is presented as part of the good news of Christianity. So what is God's judgment and what about it is good? Why does there need to be judgment at all if God is a god of love who forgives us? If we accept that God does judge us and that there will be a final judgment, how can we bear that judgment? Will we have to live in fear, especially as we grow older and our days are numbered?

In this episode Alex continues to follow the story of Jesus told in the Apostles’ Creed reflecting on how “HE SUFFERED UNDER PONTIUS PILATE, WAS CRUCIFIED, DIED, AND WAS BURIED; HE DESCENDED TO HELL.”

Jesus was falsely accused and yet he said nothing in his own defense. Why was he silent if he cared about the truth? Even more, why did he have to suffer such a terrible injustice and die such a horrible death? And what does it mean that he descended to hell? The atonement – the work of Christ at the cross – is at the very heart of Christian faith and it’s the key to our salvation.
