Activists in Richmond are planning a protest at the Chevron refinery against support of Israel’s genocide in Gaza as well as the company’s problematic environmentally racist policies here at home. That protest is set for Saturday, February 3rd at noon. We’re joined by Keala Uchoa, a youth organizer with Communities for a Better Environment in Richmond, who is one of the organizers of Saturday’s protest.

In states where abortion has been completely banned, more than sixty-four thousand rapes have resulted in force pregnancy, according to a new report titled ‘Rape-Related Pregnancies in the 14 US States With Total Abortion Bans’. Dr Samuel Dickman is one of the researchers and authors of that report, as well as an abortion provider with Planned Parenthood. He joins us to discuss that research.

For that commemoration, the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN) hosted a webinar panel, discussing Israel’s misuse of the Nazi genocide to justify the genocide of Palestinians. In Oakland, the city has been examining the potential for reintroducing a former police program called Operation Ceasefire. It’s a carrot and stick program, where the Police Department identifies people they believe to be violent, offer them social services and support structures while also threatening them with significant criminal enhancements like state and federal charges in the case that they are arrested for any crime. It turns out that the carrot portion of Operation Ceasefire had a positive impact. Joining us to discuss are George Galvis, the co-founder and executive director of Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice, along with James Burch, Deputy Director for the Anti Police-Terror Project, an organization that seeks to end police violence in Black and Brown communities.

Starting in the 1970s, small groups of feminist activists met regularly to study anatomy, practice pelvic exams on each other, and learn how to safely perform a procedure known as menstrual extraction, which can end a pregnancy, using equipment easily bought and assembled at home. This “self-help” movement grew into a robust national and international collaboration of activists determined to ensure access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, at all costs—to the point of learning how to do the necessary steps themselves.

Our guest today is Angela Hume, a feminist historian, author, literary critic, and poet, discussing her latest book that tells the history of the Bay Area’s leadership in the “self-help” abortion access movement. The book is called Deep Care: The Radical Activists Who Provided Abortions, Defied the Law, and Fought to Keep Clinics Open.

For years, in driving around the Bay Area it’s been common to spot pink billboards from a company called JewBelong, with pro-Jewish statements ranging from “Jewish Mothers: The original Yelp” to “All jews welcome. Refreshments and guilt to follow”. More recently, those billboards have become a strange and sinister zionist platform, recently printing statements like “Hamas is your problem too” or “keep calling me a zionist – nothing makes me prouder”. JewBelong posted on its instagram a particularly inflammatory image, saying, “Trust me. If Israel wanted to commit genocide in Gaza, it could.”
