A Washington Post investigation shows that law enforcement agencies have been accessing patient prescription records from pharmacies without warrants, a congressional investigation has found. Consumers are often unaware their private information is being handed over to authorities. Lawmakers surveyed eight major pharmacy chains — CVS Health, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Cigna, Optum Rx, Walmart Stores Inc., The Kroger Co. and Rite Aid Corp. along with Amazon Pharmacy. Only Amazon Pharmacy said it had a policy of informing customers when law enforcement requested their records. None of the companies said it requires a warrant before providing pharmacy records to law enforcement agencies. To discuss what this could mean specifically for women and girls post the Dobbs decision, we’re joined by Imani Gandi, Editor-at-Large for Rewire News Group. She also co-hosts the podcast Boom! A recent law may have an impact – that’s California’s Senate Bill 2, also known as the Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act which was fought for and won by a statewide coalition that included BLM Grassroots, the Anti-Police Terror Project, Alliance for Boys and Men of Color and others including the ACLU of Northern California. Joining us to discuss is Marshal Arnwine, an advocate for the Criminal Justice Program at the ACLU of Northern California. In this capacity, he helps lead and organize efforts to reform police policies for 48 Northern California counties.

Most of us have a constant relationship to technology – tools that are constantly being developed and improved from an innovation standpoint, without a consistent understanding of how those tools function. How can the technology that we rely on the most be used to track us and share our personal information? Whether you are an activist, a reporter or the target of a stalker, there can be myriad reasons to better understand how our devices work and how to keep ourselves safe.

Today we speak with two reporters who break down phone safety for us. Monique Madan investigates tech at the intersection of criminal justice, social justice, government accountability and immigration, and Wesley Callow supports The Markup’s staff product and tech needs, keeping equipment and software up to date and secure. Together they’ve published a two-part series called Without a Trace: How to Take Your Phone Off the Grid and How to Keep Your Phone Off the Grid. The Markup is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates how powerful institutions are using technology to change our society.
