Memphis is bracing to become the next city to see National Guard troops bolster already intense ICE activity harassing residents in Black and Brown communities. We speak with Jose Salazar who is a community organizer with Indivisible Memphis and a lead with The Collective Good Immigrant Pantry. Jose coordinates mutual-aid support for immigrant families and documents how the federal “Safe Task Force” presence and National Guard actions have impacted day-to-day life in Memphis.

Though Israel is not mentioned, pro-Palestinian advocates see the move as a step toward divestment from companies linked to Israel, while supporters of Israel warn it could inflame antisemitism amid rising incidents in California. Jewish Voice for Peace, alongside coalition partners, is calling on Alameda County to ensure  tax dollars aren’t  invested in entities complicit in human rights abuses — including Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. This past May, the County’s Treasury Oversight Committee took a key step by passing an ethical investment policy that bans taxpayer money from going to corporations and institutions that enable such atrocities.
