CAFTA: The Cost of Free Trade

Frequently compared to the decade-old North American Free Trade Agreement, the new Central American Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA, extends many of the same economic policies as far south as Costa Rica. Critics of CAFTA say NAFTA is responsible for high unemployment, a growing gap between the rich and poor, and massive migration from Mexico. While the Bush administration celebrates CAFTA as a leap forward, ordinary citizens from the US and throughout Central America aren’t so sure. On this edition, we’ll take a look at the potential impacts of CAFTA. – www.radioproject.org

    ElectionWatch ’04:

    "War on Terror"
After September 11th, 2001 the Bush administration created controversial policy at home and abroad in the name of homeland security. Increased surveillance, security searches, and military intervention in the Middle East have changed life in the United States. Many Arab, South Asian, and Muslim Americans have experienced an even greater reduction in their civil liberties. On this ElectionWatch ’04 edition, we take a look at how communities most impacted by Bush’s war on terror will vote in the upcoming 2004 elections. We also look at how the Patriot Act and the war in Iraq are playing a role in the election year. – www.radioproject.org

    Working Democracy:

    Participatory Movements
    in Latin America
As many Latin American countries are moving away from longstanding dictatorships, they still face the challenges of poverty. Structural adjustments imposed by the International Monetary Fund and increased privatization of resources characterize the region’s economic policies. In response, peace and social justice groups challenge these policies by implementing the concepts of worker solidarity, sovereignty, and civic participation. On this edition of Making Contact, we take a look at workers movements in Argentina and Bolivia. We also investigate how residents of Montreal are using a citizen-based model of democracy from Porto Alegre, Brazil. – www.radioproject.org

    ElectionWatch ’04:

    "Hip Hop and Elections"
Ever since it emerged off the streets of The Bronx in the mid-1970’s, hip hop has had a significant and growing influence on popular culture. But what influence will hip hop culture have in the 2004 elections? On this ElectionWatch ’04 edition of Making Contact we take a look at how grassroots activists within the hip hop community view the political process, and how they are using hip hop to organize around the November elections and beyond. We’ll hear from radio DJ Davey D, poet Aya De Leone, journalist Jeff Chang and musician KRS 1.

    Refugees of Development:
    India and Multinationals

With the country’s 1991 economic reform package, India significantly reduced trade barriers, moving away from a model of self-sufficiency. The World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund have loaned India money to promote economic growth. Anti-corporate globalization activists warn that this trend towards liberalization has given multi-national corporations, like Monsanto, Dow, Unilever, and Coca Cola too much power at the expense of the people. On this edition, we take a close-up look at a small town in Southern India and their struggle against Coca Cola. We also hear from an Indian journalist and activist Nityanand Jayaraman, who has been following the impact of multi-national corporations in India. – www.radioproject.org

    Deadly Extractions:

Oil and Mining Interests in Africa
When President Bush made a one-week tour of the African continent in early July 2003, the U.S. public heard a lot about human suffering and conflict there. The tragic AIDS epidemic and the toll of bloody wars are critical issues that should be examined in-depth. Yet, one key component seems to be missing from the coverage: multinational corporate interests and their effects on people in African nations. On this edition of Making Contact, we take a look at some examples: In Tanzania a Canadian-based corporation is accused of burying alive artisan miners in order to acquire control of a gold mine; and, the drive for oil has sparked political and social upheavals in Sudan and Angola. – www.radioproject.org

    Courage Under Fire:

    Resistance to War
Resistance to the status quo is a common theme among social, political, and environmental movements. But resistance during war can increase the stakes, sometimes with dire consequences. On this edition of Making Contact, we’ll take a look at resistance in Rwanda during the nationwide call for genocide in 1994, Japanese American activism during World War II, and the legacy of draft-registration resistance and conscientious objection since the Vietnam War. – www.radioproject.org

    ElectionWatch ‘04:

    Taxonomics:
    Federal Tax Cuts
    and the Budget Deficit

During his Presidential bid in 2000, then-Governor George W. Bush said tax cuts would help those at the bottom end of the economic ladder. During his 4 years of Presidency, however, it is the wealthy who have benefited the most from those tax breaks. Meanwhile, in the face of these tax cuts, funding for social services has decreased, creating the country’s largest deficit. Many economists are predicting a fiscal train wreck. On this edition of ElectionWatch ’04, we take a look at how Bush’s tax cuts impact the economy, state budgets, and small businesses. – www.radioproject.org

    Building Walls:

    Life in the Palestinian Territories"
Since the lines were drawn over 50 years ago, the borders of Israel have been intensely contested. With the construction of a wall in the Palestinian territories, a new border is being created. The Israeli government says they are building the wall for security reasons, but many Palestinians and human rights groups declare it is a violation of their civil liberties. On this edition of Making Contact, we examine the impact of the current border conflict on Palestinian sovereignty.

    Trouble at Sea:
The State of the World’s Oceans
    (Encore Edition)

While seemingly indestructible, the ocean is a fragile eco-system. It’s increasingly under threat from over- fishing, coastal development, and pollution. On this edition of Making Contact, we’ll take a look at the over-all health of the ocean today, along with a close-up of the impact of cruise ships and shrimp farming. – www.radioproject.org
