    Patagonian Winds of Resistance

In the midst of a shattered economy in Argentina, US-based Meridian Gold acquired a gold deposit in Patagonia worth an estimated one billion dollars. This mining project, however, could damage the natural environment and the local community’s way of life. On this edition of Making Contact Pauline Bartolone traveled to the small town of Esquel in Southern Argentina, where the residents successfully halted the gold mining venture. Their struggle is part of a larger movement of social transformation in Argentina. www.radioproject.org

War Against Women, Women Against War:
A Report Back From the World Social Forum

Violence against women manifests in both overt and covert forms: from rape used as a war tactic to women themselves participating in violence. On this edition of Making Contact, we feature three leading feminists: Egyptian sociologist Nawal El Saadawi, activist and author Arundhati Roy, and Saher Saba of the Revolutionary Association of Women in Afghanistan (RAWA, www.rawa.org). They discuss the disproportionate impacts that fundamentalism, colonization, and corporate globalization have on women. They spoke recently at the 2004 World Social Forum in Mumbai, India. -www.radioproject.org

During wartime, the U.S. public is barraged with images and information about the current military offensive. Featuring: Vietnamese villagers, Toong, Tien Tam and Tuan; Mike MacGuire, Australian Vietnam War Veteran; Lee Soo Man, Head of the Vietnam Agent Orange Korean Veterans Association; Dzavit Azari, Bosniak; Emrus Huduti, Recane’s Local Community Chief; Merlit Milicevic, Teacher at Recane Primary School; Mustafa Balje, Bosniak Language Bi-monthly Alem; Roma women: Bease Selimi and Miradije Ibeciri; Rustem Ibisi, Milke Community Leader; and Nusret Hasani, Vraniste villager.

    Empty Promises?: NAFTA at 10

It’s been ten years since the North American Free Trade Agreement was implemented. Proponents claimed that NAFTA would be a solution for poverty and sluggish economic growth in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Opponents warned that NAFTA would spark a race to the bottom in wages, labor rights, and environmental standards. On this edition of Making Contact, we hear from people who are working on the front lines of so-called free trade-farmers and a fisherman-and get their perspectives on corporate-led economic globalization. We also have a report from Chiapas, Mexico, where indigenous communities celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Zapatista uprising.

Queer as Youth. What’s it like to be young and queer? Young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth are more likely to be harassed and victims of hate crime than their straight peers. They have high drop out rates from school. And studies show that LGBT youth are more prone to depression, drug abuse, and suicide. But as more young people are coming out, both lgbt and their straight peers are challenging the isolation and stigma of being gay.
