Last Rights: Respecting Diversity at the End of Life

    (encore edition)

"We act as if there is one definition of good end of life care. And I

would argue there is no one definition. In the end, it’s going to be many
    definitions."

In the American health care system, "good end-of-life care" often supports

the white middle-class, but people of diverse religions, languages and
races often have very different needs and expectations. On this edition,
producer Claire Schoen looks at how miscommunication, stereotyping and
racism influence health care for people of color as they approach death.

People who’ve risked their lives to enter the U.S. undocumented share their personal stories of why they came, and what they hope for their futures and the future of immigrants in this country.

Immigration reform is the hot button issue in the U.S. Talk to your

colleagues, friends or family, about it, and you¹re certain to spark a
debate about what should be done with the 12 million undocumented people
working and living in this country.

In fact, the U.S. Congress remains deadlocked over the issue, each side

unable to hammer out a compromise that makes sense. So why is there so much
    debate?

On this edition, people who¹ve risked their lives to enter the U.S.

undocumented share their personal stories of why they came, and what they
hope for their futures and the future of immigrants in this country.

    The Color of Wealth

Income generation is one indicator of power differences between racial

groups in the United States. But accumulated wealth, not income alone may be
the most revealing index of inequality. So why the disparities? Author and
organizer Meizhu Lui has some answers.

Income generation is one indicator of power differences between racial

groups in the United States. For instance, in 1968 African Americans made 55
cents for every dollar a white person made. In 2004, it was 58 cents. But
accumulated wealth, not income alone, may be the most revealing index of
    inequality.

So why the disparities? Author and organizer Meizhu Lui has some answers.

Lui is from a family of Chinese immigrants. She was a kitchen worker for 20
years, and she rose through the labor ranks to become president of her local
union. Now she’s executive director of United for a Fair Economy, a
non-partisan group that raises awareness about the damaging consequences of
concentrated wealth and power in the United States.

Lui recently co-authored the book ‘The Color of Wealth: The Story Behind the

U.S. Racial Wealth Divide’ and spoke in San Francisco at Cody’s Books in
June 2006. National Radio Project held a small joint-fundraiser reception
with Meizhu Lui when she was in San Francisco on her book tour.

    Senior Producer/Host: Tena Rubio.

Intern and technical assistant: Alexis McCrimmon

Many Lines of Fire: Women at War

This week on Making Contact: The women serving and dying for the U.S. in Iraq – what are their experiences and points of view? Sarah Olson speaks with veterans about military power politics and the price paid by women seeking to serve their country.

Many Americans assume that women in the U.S. military are stationed far from

the fighting. While it¹s true they can¹t train for frontline combat
positions, the changing nature of the Iraq war has placed many women at the
center of the conflict. Yet the women serving and dying for the U.S. have
received very little attention. Who are they, why did they join and what are
their experiences and points of view?

On this edition, Sarah Olson speaks with veterans of the U.S. Army, Navy and

Marines, and to one active duty soldier who served for a year as an Army
journalist in Iraq. Each woman has a unique story, but all share an
understanding of the power politics of the U.S. military and the price that
is paid by women seeking to serve their county.

    Catch of the Day: Mercury

What’s the Catch of the Day? Mercury. It’s poisoning our waters, our fish,

our bodies and it isn’t going away any time soon. Each year tons of mercury
gets into our streams, bays and oceans. How does it get there, what does it
do to us and how can we protect ourselves?

On this edition, we go to the San Francisco Bay. Joined by a public health

analyst, we’ll talk to local fisherman, new moms, restaurant-goers and the
    E.P.A. about mercury.

This program was made possible in part by a grant from the As You Sow

    Foundation.

    Featuring:

Steve, fisherman; Eli Saddler, Northern California GotMercury.org public

health analyst; Sarah and Kim, moms on pier; Linda and Margaret, PF Chang’s
China Bistro patron; Allan Hirsch, CA Office of Environmental Health Hazard
Assessment Chief Deputy Director; Lisa Rudman, National Radio Project’s
