Since the passing of the Patriot Act, many things have changed in the U.S.,

and not necessarily for the better.

On this edition, we look at Bush Administration policies that many contend

"We act as if there is one definition of good end of life care. And I would

argue there is no one definition. In the end, it¹s going to be many
    definitions."

In the American health care system, "good end-of-life care" often supports

the white middle-class, but people of diverse religions, languages and races
often have very different needs and expectations. On this edition, producer
Claire Schoen looks at how miscommunication, stereotyping and racism
influence health care for people of color as they approach death.

    Featuring:

Dr. Lavera Crawley, faculty member, Stanford University, The Center for

Biomedical Ethics; Norma del Rio, social worker and bereavement coordinator,
San Francisco Health at Home; Anne Hughes, advanced practice nurse for
    palliative care, Laguna Honda Hospital; Tamara Liang, Self Help Homecare;
Evelyn Jordan, president, Florida Coalition on Hispanic Aging; Carmalita
Tursi, director, AARP’s National Diversity Program; Mrs. Sang, Chinese woman
who died of pancreatic cancer; Theresa Kwong, social worker, Self Help; Chui
Lee, nurse, Self Help; Teresa Bowannie, Zuni Home Health Care Agency; Dr.
Bruce Finke, consultant, Zuni Home Health Care Agency; Reverend Frank
Jackson, Faith Presbyterian Church; Regina Dyer, African-American woman who
died of breast cancer; Dr. Richard Payne, director, Duke University

Americans can¹t afford health care. In the last four years, the cost has

increased more than 70 percent. Right now, more than 46 million people don¹t
have health insurance and that number continues to rise. The U.S. is the
only industrialized nation that does not guarantee universal health care.

As costs of insurance spiral out of control and the government continues to

pour money into Iraq, many people wonder how they are going to survive the
health care crisis in this country. Joshua Smith is an uninsured freelance
journalist, who traveled across the country to find out what others are
saying about the state of health care in the U.S.

The evangelical right gets a lot of airtime on cable, radio, television and

in the mass media in general. But, a lot of the messages you hear are
distilled for a mainstream audience. So what’s really being said behind the
scenes? This week, Abby Scher takes us behind the scenes to the "Values
Voter Summit" in Washington, DC, where leaders of the Christian right
gathered to talk about gay marriage, abortion, and terrorism. With the
upcoming elections, evangelical right leaders say there are two wars America
is fighting: terrorism and the war for values.

Scher, editor of Public Eye, a publication that monitors the activities and

agenda of the Christian right, attended the summit in September 2006, along
with dozens of other liberal activists.

David Korten and The Great Turning

You wouldn’t have expected David Korten to raise any doubts about the global

economy and its ability to solve poverty and environmental damage if you
knew him in the 1980s. At that time, he was working for the U.S. Agency for
International Development, touting the benefits of international investment
in South East Asia. Then something changed.

Far from creating universal prosperity, Korten observed that the economic

models of the organizations he worked for were producing devastating
consequences for people and planet. In 1992 he wrote "When Corporations Rule
the World," his deeper examination of economic models that serve the
interests of wealthy people who are in the position to profit from global
    corporations and financial markets.

His most recent book is, "The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth

Community." Korten argues that corporate consolidation of power is merely a
contemporary manifestation of what he calls "Empire." By Empire, he means,
"the organization of society by hierarchies of domination grounded in
violent chauvinisms of race, gender, religion, nationality, language, and
class." He says that as a result, our society is unraveling, whether you
look at climate change, dwindling fossil fuel supplies, environmental
degradation, or an unfair global economic system. According to Korten, we
cannot avoid the unraveling. We can, however, turn a potentially terminal
    crisis into a new opportunity.

In May 2006, Korten spoke to an audience at the First Congregational Church

in Oakland, California, about why he thinks we’re on the cusp of a major
shift from a world dominated by economic values to one that embraces human
    values.
