Kreative Kontrol

Canada’s king of hip-hop (sorry Drake), Maestro Fresh Wes and I have a chat about the 25th anniversary of his colossal hit single, “Let Your Backbone Slide ,” how to keep Canadian audiences engaged with rap music, and his great, star-studded new album, Orchestrated Noise. And budding Canadian dance-pop star Diamond Rings and I discuss what’s up with his […]

Weird tone to this one. Drew Marshall of the Sled Island music festival gives a firsthand account of the flooding that has devastated Calgary and forced Sled Island to cancel its plans, Matt Myers of the U.S. band Houndmouth (who play Montreal on June 27 and Toronto on June 28) talks about the fake ‘folk […]

Today you can hear my conversation with David Yow about his new solo LP, Tonight You Look Like a  Spider. David is an amazing man who used to sing in bands like Scratch Acid, the Jesus Lizard, and Qui among others. These are some of the best things I’ve ever seen and a lot of […]

Ah, the Sunday evening podcast launch. Social media suicide! It’ll be worth it though. On this episode, I head down to the Speed River in Guelph to speak to Tragically Hip superfan, Joshua Kloke, who is celebrating the release of his memoir about the band, Escape is At Hand, with a book launch at the Supermarket […]

One of my favourite bands ever is the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and they’ve got a few Canadian tour dates coming up soon (including Sled Island this week and Ontario shows next month). I called up Jon Spencer for a chat about what things have been like since the band started playing together again and […]

On this episode, I take a closer look at the final years of one of the best rock band of all time, the Clash. While some fans and critics dismiss them, a new book called We Are the Clash: The Last Stand of The Only Band That Mattered is in progress that aims the right […]

My friend and colleague James Keast invited me to a Jays game on Sunday and it seemed like a great place for us to talk about jocks vs. music nerds, his work at Exclaim!, his role at the Polaris Music Prize and tips for jurors, his take on Arts & Crafts and their Field Trip […]

I drove down to Washington D.C. with Jim Guthrie and his band (Samir Khan, Jordan Howard, Randy Lee, Marshall Bureau, and J. J. Ipsen) so they could record a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR for All Songs Considered . We almost got sent home at the border. Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton were kind to me and gave me the lowdown on different things. We all […]

Surprise surprise, another podcast this week. Even I’m surprised, surprised. I speak to Graham Wright about Tokyo Police Club playing the Red Bull Tour Bus (it’s a robot stage/bus hybrid!) for a free show in Toronto on June 2, why he feels bad for Mayor Rob Ford, and why he’s super excited about TPC’s new […]

This week:   Is Mayor Rob Ford beyond sympathy? Have these allegations of substance abuse humanized him in some way? Musician, author, and Toronto citizen Dave Bidini says no and pretty much no.         A new supergroup called the Good Family crosses generations, bringing the Good Brothers and the Sadies together for […]
