  • Krush Performance: Technology Doping & Fall Sport Returns

Equipment technology is pushing human performance to new heights. Is it unfair? Unnatural? How much should we regulate the influence of equipment on sport performance?

We talk with Kelly Hodgson from United Sport and Cycle about the influence of technology on performance and what new technology can you get your hands on right now!

Also, as fall sport returns, it is time for a serious discussion on the implications of returning to sport post COVID. We talk with Manny Schmidt, NHLPA Certified Player Agent and Founder and CEO of Link Management. What do we all need to be thinking about to reduce the risk of injury, performance burnout and to maximize our development and performance? Athlete development is a LONG game and if there was ever a time to implement patients in sport this may be it.

Finally, we’ll be spinning the incredible music from one of our favorite bands, The Whale and the Wolf.

  • Krush Performance: Collegiate Athletes Making Money While The Sun Is Shining

The sports landscape has changed dramatically for collegiate athletes as new rules now allow athletes to make money off their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL).

I love this move. The window of opportunity for earning money is incredibly short for athletes this is a major expansion of that window.

We are joined by Adam White, the CEO of Front Office Sports, to discuss how these new rules might influence the marketplace and we will look at a new online course they are hosting to help everyone better understand the NIL rules and how collegiate athletes can earn while they are at school.

We kick the show off talking Olympics, you asked which medal I think is most valuable and I lay out my answer.

Also, we talk hockey. Are you ready for the season? Is your equipment ready?

Make sure you give yourself some lead time here, getting equipment this fall might be more difficult than usual, we explain.

  • Krush Performance: The Return To Sport – Reduce Injury, Increase Performance

Everyone is excited about the return to sport. The ebb and flow of a regular fall sports season is on its way and while most people have been fairly active over the summer, we still need to use a little caution as we get back to it.

We are joined by Tahisha Naidu, Physiotherapist at Advantage Sports Medicine & Head Therapist for the Saskatchewan Rush of the NLL, as we discuss what we need to be thinking about as we return to sport not just to reduce the risk of injury but to also return at your very best.

Also, we’ll discuss how some sports take away more than they give back and the differences between preparing young developing athletes, elite high school and collegiate athletes, our weekend warriors right up to our pros.

The food industry has evolved faster than our bodies! It is time to get a better understanding of how the foods we eat impact our health, our bodies, our brains, and even our performance. It is a cause-and-effect system: If you eat this, this is what’s going to happen and the entire food system on planet Earth is based on evolution.

Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, Chief of Biomedical Research at the Glycemic Research Institute, and I look back on the history of our food chain and discuss how we worked our way into the mess we are in today.

WE ARE LOSING THE BATTLE & YOU ARE NOT TO BLAME!

We review the latest statistics on obesity, diabetes, degenerative brain disease for both adults and our children, discuss why diets don’t work, and break down and explain why a calorie is NOT a calorie.

  • Krush Performance: Is Change Really That Good?

Yes, we know that change can be a good thing but too much change too soon…..

This week on Krush Performance, we are responding to all of the notes and messages you have sent in, and as a result, we will continue our discussion on mid-season baseball.

We had several e-mails, messages, and notes asking us to go a little deeper into the impact of missing an entire competitive season might have in developmental and affiliated baseball, what are the implications on injury rates, performance, and long-term development?

Also, you asked for an opinion on how the contraction of the minor leagues might impact player development – and we do have an opinion on this one for sure.

We will also address how some of the new rule changes made in baseball may influence player performance right now and player development moving forward. Could there be lasting issues?

We think it is a real possibility.

To help us put all of this into perspective, Krush Favorite, Rick Knapp, Pitching Coach for the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays AAA affiliate), joins us. Rick has been around the game a long time and we are really looking forward to tapping into his vast experience to get his insights and opinions on these issues and more.

So, while the theme of this week’s show will be baseball, there are very important insights for athletes, coaches, parents, and organizations in any sport.

  • Krush Performance: The Science Of Sweetness – Pt. 2 – Fuel Trafficking

“Don’t people have the right to know the metabolic effect of what they are putting in their mouths as it drastically affects the body. People have the right to know!” ~ Dr. Ann de Wees Allen

The Krush War on Sugar continues! Each month, we will host a “Science Of Sweetness” episode as we explain how the food and beverages you consume impact your health, your brain, and your performance.

Today, we discuss fuel trafficking and we start the conversation on how artificial sweeteners are wreaking havoc on our metabolism and our brains.

Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, Chief of Biomedical Research at the Glycemic Research Institute, and I break down how the fuels we consume are identified and then directed to specific pathways that deliver them to a destination.

THE PROBLEM: Getting the right fuels, in the correct amount for what you are trying to accomplish and then getting those fuels on the right pathway.

THE CURVEBALL: Artificial sweeteners and excessively sweet sugar substitutes are misinterpreted by the brain and may even alter the part of the brain that controls metabolism with potentially lasting consequences!

  • Krush Performance: Coaching Bias & Talent Identification

Why do some coaches have more success than others? Is it possible they see things others don’t?

Perhaps they focus on characteristics that other coaches do not. We do know that no one has a greater influence on a team’s approach, internal culture, and learning environment than the coach(s).

For decades researchers and practitioners have discussed an elusive ability that allows some coaches to see qualities in an athlete that point to their talent and future potential that other coaches just don’t see. A trait referred to as The Coaches’ Eye.

This week on Krush Performance, we wrap up our 3-part mini-series looking at Talent and Talent ID. We are joined by Dr. Alex Roberts of La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Roberts’ research has focused on coaching and her recent publication, “The Coaches Eye: Exploring decision making during talent identification,” highlights a fascinating concept called coaching bias.

Coaching Bias is not necessarily a negative thing, but it describes how coaches may choose athletes based more on their own values and strengths rather than the pure talent and skill of the athletes they are evaluating.

If the talent identification values of the coach, team, and organization are not aligned it is very difficult to have success. For the athlete, you must be very aware of what the coach values and that you are entering an environment where you can develop and succeed.

It’s fascinating and it is a major influence at all levels of sports.

For anyone involved in sport, this is a must-listen episode of Krush Performance as we dive into coaching and the coach’s role in talent identification.
