Cheryl Semmel, Executive Director, USA Kansas rejoins Bill Hagerman for another podcast. Topics for the day centered on  what is currently happening at Topeka with Kansas Legislature.  But before Semmel gets to the Legislature topics she gives recognition to Bart Goering for being one of three candidates for the AASA President-Elect position , Brenda Dietrich on her acceptance of the Helping Kids Grant, and Dr. Bill Hagerman on being 2014 KSSA Distinguished Service Award recipient.

Topeka, Kansas – The Kansas School Superintendents’ Association has selected Lawrence Superintendent Rick Doll as the 2014 Kansas Superintendent of the Year. Doll has led the Lawrence Public Schools since 2009. On Monday evening, Cheryl Semmel, executive director, made the announcement during the Lawrence USD 497 board meeting.

“Rick is a passionate advocate not only in his district, but for students statewide. He has demonstrated a clear commitment to preparing students to be successful, productive citizens and developing future leaders. His passion is deeply rooted in a belief that each child can learn,” says Cheryl Semmel, executive director of the Kansas School Superintendents’ Association.

Candidates for Superintendent of the Year are assessed according to their professionalism, communication, community involvement and leadership in meeting the needs of students. As Kansas Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Doll will be recognized at the KSSA Awards and Recognition Breakfast during the United School Administrators of Kansas annual convention in January, and considered for the National Superintendent of the Year program. In addition, KSSA provides a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior selected by the Kansas Superintendent of the Year.

“I’m humbled by this recognition, which really speaks to my good fortune in working in several Kansas school districts with outstanding school board members, administrators, educators and support staff who truly care about what’s best for kids,” said Doll.

“The Lawrence community demands excellence from its public schools and backs that up by providing the support necessary to achieve it. Lawrence has much to celebrate in terms of student achievement gains, progress made toward closing achievement gaps, implementation of the blended learning instructional model, improvements in local graduation rates, extensive school facility and technology upgrades being made as a result of the school bond issue and community collaboration surrounding an expansion of career and technical education and training opportunities. All of these accomplishments stem from a district-wide focus on the school board’s goals of excellence, equity and engagement,” Doll added.

Dedicating his professional life to educational leadership and excellence, Doll has served the education profession for 38 years, as superintendent in Lawrence (2009-present), Louisburg (2005-09) and Rock Creek (1993-2005) school districts, an associate professor at Kansas State University (2002-04),

assistant superintendent in McPherson (1989-93), school principal in Wamego (1983-89) and Herington (1980-83) and a history and political science teacher at Herington High School (1976-79).

“Dr. Doll has done a tremendous job in the Lawrence district as he has expanded opportunities for students and worked collaboratively with community organizations. Rick is respected for his leadership and courage to think beyond the schoolhouse walls in order to provide learning opportunities for all students,” says Kansas Commissioner of Education Diane DeBacker.

Doll is a member of the American Association of School Administrators, the Kansas School Superintendents’ Association and the United School Administrators of Kansas. He chairs the McPherson College Board of Trustees. In addition to his educational leadership, Doll is active in various community and civic organizations, serving on the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Lawrence Inter-Generational Housing Board of Directors and the Lawrence Junior Achievement Board of Directors. He also is a member of the Lawrence Rotary Club.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from McPherson College in history and education and his master’s and Ed.D. in educational administration from Kansas State University. In 2002, the University Council for Educational Administratio...

Dr. Kiblinger is superintendent at USD 308, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Dr. Kiblinger started in education in Fredonia in southeast Kansas. She was language arts, drama and speech teacher at Fredonia Middle School and Fredonia High School from 1989 to 1999. From 1997 to 1999, Dr. Kiblinger was school improvement and public relations coordinator for Fredonia High School.

The educator served as an adjunct professor for Kansas State University from 2006 to 2008 and has her ELL endorsement from Newman University.

Dr. Kiblinger also has been a small business owner, having owned Schwatken Grain & Gravel from 1988 to 1998, a trucking company that operated in the four-state area near Sycamore, Kan..

The educator received her doctorate in administration and leadership from Kansas State University in 2004, receiving the outstanding graduate student award that year. She received her master’s in educational leadership in 1997 from Pittsburg State University and her bachelor of science in education in 1989 from Pitt State. A 1985 graduate of Neodesha High School, she received her associate of arts in 1987 from Independence Community College. Dr. Kiblinger has also received the Baldrige National Quality Award Examiner training.

In this episode of KSSA Talks Bill Hagerman visits with Donald Fast from Educational Design Solutions, a company specializing in reading and math software to help students and schools improve learning. Chery Semmel of USA Kansas rejoins Bill Hagerman for another podcast. Topics for the day centered on a recent KSSA meeting in conjunction with the Kansas Association of School Boards meeting. KSSA Day at KASB prompted much discussion on the upcoming legislative issues, the upcoming State Board decision on what the next State Assessment will be, and on the Innovative Districts’ applications. All of the aforementioned topics are discussed and current progress on each topic is reviewed.

Semmel currently serves as the executive director for USA Kansas and the Kansas School Superintendents’ Association (KSSA).  She is also the president-elect for the Association of State Executives (ASE), which is affiliated with AASA, and a board member for Destination Imagination Kansas.  She is often invited to guest lecture on the “Politics of P-20 education” and volunteers as a mentor for high school students.  In 2009, Semmel volunteered as an international elections observer during the presidential elections in El Salvador and Bolivia.

Join Bill Hagerman, Cody Heitschmidt and Steve Wyckoff as they tackle educational awareness and the ability to use digital communication as a purposeful  tool.  An analogy is made that Social Media is much like driving.  People learning to drive are given directions, parameters, rules and guidelines which will make them socially acceptable while driving.  This is a process that needs to be engaged in the social media aspects of the digital communication’s world.

Twitter is a an example of social media that will laterally help you stay informed on anything you may be interested in. Flipboard is an app that will collect the news you care about and curate your favorite stories into your own magazine on any topic imaginable. You must have a twitter account to activate Flipboard.

The mission of the Kansas Educational Leadership Institute is to collaborate and share resources to support professional growth of educational leaders needed in Kansas schools for the 21st Century.

 

Dr. Don Wells

Wells grew up in Washington County, Kansas and graduated from Washington High School. He attended Coffeyville Community College on scholarship and transferred to Emporia State University; it was there that he completed his Bachelor’s degree in education.

His accepted his first teaching and coaching position was in Sedgwick, Kansas, and in 1974, he became the principal at Sedgwick Junior/Senior High School. His next position was assistant principal at Abilene High School at which he spent several years there prior to his work in sales for recreational vehicles in Junction City.

In 1979, he returned to education as principal of Kingman High School and served in that capacity until he was selected to be superintendent of Cheney Schools in 1985. From there, Wells went on to serve as superintendent of Mulvane Schools from 1996 to 2001.

In 2001, he accepted the interim superintendent’s position at Haysville USD 261 and then moved on to serve as the Charter School Administrator for the Augusta District in conjunction with the South Central Kansas Education Service Center in Clearwater. In 2003, he returned to Washington County to be closer to his father, who was ill. While there, he served as superintendent for the North Central and Hillcrest districts. During this leadership, both districts consolidated with their neighbors of Republic County and Washington County Schools creating USDs 108 and 109. That consolidation effort resulted in Wells becoming the superintendent at Scott County in 2006 and continuing until his recent retirement.

He and his wife Deanna live in Hutchinson and have five children.

Glen is the superintendent of schools of Smoky Valley USD 400 in Lindsborg.

He has been a physical education instructor, athletic director and served as high school principal for 14 years.  Prior to coming to Smoky Valley in 2000, Glen was principal at Hillsboro High School for 8 years.

As a high school principal he was very active in Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals (KASSP).  Currently Mr. Suppes is the president-elect of Kansas School Superintendents’ Association (KSSA).  In June of this year he will take over as the new president of the association.

You have heard Bill Hagerman say many times that KSSA is the powerful voice for education in Kansas.  Over the past few years KSSA has taken many steps to become more involved in legislative activities and weigh in on issues that greatly affect public education.  More and more superintendents are stepping up to the plate, serving on committees, contacting legislators, and testifying in Topeka.

The Kansas School Superintendent’s Association is being recognized more and more as that powerful voice.  Legislators are contacting association members for direction and support on new bills.  As our organization strengthens, we must be prepared to stand strong and take a firm position on matters that affect our districts and our children.

No longer can a school superintendent just stay at home and run his or her district.  We have another obligation.  We must be involved in the decisions in Topeka that impact our schools.  Major changes are occurring and new financial resources are scarce.  Our representatives need to know who you are and what you stand for.  Building relationships with our legislators is imperative, now more than ever.

We have some real challenges ahead of us, and many times we don’t know for sure what those challenges will be.  KSSA pledges to build stronger connections within the organization by improving communication and taking advantage of the internal strengths of individual members.  KSSA Talk is one example of connecting our members, as well as non-members.
