This year’s conference, The Audience in Focus?, is about the audience and the possibilities and challenges it involves working with the audience in focus. To welcome a broader group of people, from different backgrounds and conditions, often mean that we have to question our habitual models and structures.

Among the presenters are Heather Maitland, one of the most renowned consultants in Audience Development in Europe who will talk about what cultural institutions and practitioners can gain from working audience focused. Alan Brown is a researcher and consultant and will talk about the relation between what we present and the setting we present it in. Dawn Walton, Artistic Director and founder of Eclipse Theatre in Sheffield will discuss their work with a diverse led approach. Andrew McIntyre, co-founder of Morris Hargreaves McIntyre, one of the worlds leading organizations in cultural segmentation, will present and launch the study Kultursegment Sverige, which is the largest comprehensive study of the Swedish arts and culture market ever.

Art to the audience – the role of the middle hands in performing art (LIVE - 2018-08-24)

#49 Teaterfrukost: Att använda sitt kulturella och etniska arv (LIVE - 2018-08-22)

Alla är vi produkter av våra arv. Eller? Nyansen på vår hud, sättet vi pratar på och hur vi för oss. Vår släkts historia. Är vi bundna till den? Använder vi oss av den? Stärker den oss? Eller borde vi bara sudda ut alla olikheter och vara så lika varandra som möjligt?

Oavsett vilken blandning av kulturellt och etniskt arv vi har - skånskt, västgötskt, finskt, tyskt, iranskt, kenyanskt, mörkare eller blekare – så påverkas vi av det. Hur ska vi då förhålla oss till detta arv? Och vilken roll spelar det på scenen? Detta samtalar Erik Tosterud och Josette Bushell-Mingo om under höstens första teaterfrukost. Samtalsledare är Astrid Assefa. Teaterfrukosten hålls i anslutning till Göteborgs dans- och teaterfestival.

Josette Bushell-Mingo är en erfaren brittisk-svensk teaterskådespelare och regissör som i sitt konstnärliga arbete i hög grad motiveras av kampen mot rasism.

Erik Tosterud är en ekonom som studerar projektledning inom kultur i Göteborg och tar med sig erfarenheter från Brasilien, Harlem och Dalarna till bordet.

Moderator till samtalet är Astrid Assefa – skådespelare, regissör, logonom och f.d. teaterchef. Ända sedan 1970-talet har hon arbetat för mångfald och jämställdhet både konstnärligt och politiskt. Hösten 2018 arbetar Astrid som skådespelare på Backa Teater och repeterar ”DNA – Dansa Nära Anhörig” med premiär den 20 oktober.

Esthetic trends and pitfalls in the performing arts (LIVE - 2018-08-22)

The conversation is held in English

Clearly influenced by German theatre, our stages have in recent years been filled with new, playful forms. Classics have been deconstructed, live projections and sound art have shared performance space with acting, and texts have lost their dominant position.

But formal renovation of theatre is not welcomed by one and all. Debaters sound the alarm, proclaiming shallow productions resulting from conceptual experimentation. Does the rule of the director impoverish the art of the actor? Is the theatre experiencing an identity crisis in the midst of its enthusiastic search for renewal? This will be a conversation about trends and pitfalls, manifestos and the search for expanded expressivity – a conversation about the theatre of today and tomorrow!

Issues of power relations and the culture of silence were prominent in this past winter’s political debates. What is the importance of trust, working methods and the performance space itself in the artistic process? Can the kind of social mobilization we have seen in the #metoo-movement contribute to artistic mobilization? And could new ways of organizing performance art provide better conditions for creativity? Follow a visionary conversation about working methods, artistic creation, and artistic form and content within and beyond institutional performance art.

The Queer Costume onstage and in parade (LIVE) with Yolanda Bohm Ramirez, Carl Olof Berg, Alyssa Chloë and Zafire Vrba (19 august 2018)

Inspired by The Decades Ball and Europride’s parade, we’ll take a closer look at the significance of queer costuming as artistic expression and political statement. What have clothes and fashion meant for HBTQIA activism? Can we see traces of ballroom and whacking fashions on Europe’s established stages? Has drag become mainstream?

Yolanda Bohm Ramirez – Förläsare, aktivist och spoken word-poet som i vintras debuterade med diktsamlingen IKON.

Carl Olof Berg – Frilansande koreograf och regissör som i sin konstnärliga praktik utforskar maskulinitet, sexualitet och prestige.

Alyssa Chloë – Dansare, koreograf och grundare av Urban Anarchy. Aktiv på undergroundscenen med dansstilarna punking och whacking, med rötter i Los Angeles gaykultur.

Zafire Vrba – Konstnär, artist och pedagog som bl a arbetar med tillgänglighet, transperspektiv och tryggare rum. Zafire gör läromedel, tv-program, håller workshops i självförsvar och driver det feministiska galleriet FAGS.

The session is meant to understand the importance of a good, consistent and yet brief technique of communication that enables to present a project in a few words and yet, never forgetting the intention to sell to the listener.

Communication skills are by far the most forgotten aspect of the selling process. It is not just a question of a good marketing mix. It deals with two main elements:

•RESEARCH AND PREPARATION, before approaching any type of buyers

•Then, LEARN HOW TO PITCH with clarity, consistency and persuasion”
