On today’s Kwibuka Podcast episode, we hear about massacres on 12 May 1994 at ADEPR Nyabisindu Church in Muhanga District that wiped out Tutsis that were hiding in and around the Church, including Tutsi who had taken refuge from various parts of Gitarama. The episode also details the killings at Bisesero where thousands of Tutsis from different parts of Kibuye and Gikongoro resisted and fought off attacks until Friday, 13 May 1994. On that date, the hill was attacked by heavily armed killers. Tutsis at Bisesero succumbed to these attacks and more than 30,000 Tutsis were killed that day.

Today’s episode spans the first three days of May 1994. Thousands of Tutsis who took refuge in different areas continued to be attacked despite efforts to defend themselves. Tutsis on Karama Hill fought off attacks from 18 April up until 1 May, when they were faced with a vicious attack from Interahamwe, police and gendarmes that lasted four hours. Elsewhere, Tutsis who had taken refuge at the Hotel des Milles Collines, paying hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina to stay there, were constantly under threat from the genocidal government’s attempts to massacre them.

Today’s episode details the massacres of Tutsi in Gisenyi Sector of Rubavu District; the birthplace of President Habyarimana and many members of his Akazu government who were at the forefront of hate politics in Rwanda. Since the start of the Liberation struggle in 1990 Tutsi in different areas such as Bigogwe, Kayove, Nyamyumba and more had been regularly killed after being falsely accused of being RPF accomplices. On 30th of April, surviving Tutsis are lured from their hiding places by a truck with speakers driving along the streets and announcing restoration of peace.
