On today’s Kwibuka Podcast episode French soldiers, accompanied by 3 international journalists, visit Bisesero hill where upon their arrival, refugees fled into hiding, not sure whether to trust the soldiers or not. Eventually, a French speaking refugee approached them and began to recount a gruesome struggle of self-defence which lasted for two months despite consistent, daily attacks. One of the journalists, Patrick De Saint-Exupéry documented commanding Lt. Col. Duval transmitting reports to Paris of what he had seen and expressing his preparedness to protect the thousands of refugees on the hill. The refusal to intervene, left surviving Tutsis abandoned and in the hands of killers who carried out a 3-day massacre starting on 27 June 1994. This massacre wiped out more than 2,000 Tutsi refugees less than 3km from the site of French troops camping in Gishyita.
