While Pat's searching for real estate on the Forest Moon of Endor, Chris is here to answer one of the questions we get asked the most: "where do I start with Star Wars books?" As our favourite book of the current Canon is "Bloodline" by Claudia Gray, Chris explores the books currently set in the thirty years between Episodes VI and VII, and how they enhance the overall narrative (without spoiling anything, so you can still enjoy them for yourself!). The Marvel comics and Star Wars: Resistance also come up - the Sequel era may seem sparse on details, but there's a lot of great stories across all forms of Star Wars media!

Welcome back to the Quarter Portion Podcast, the only Star Wars podcast that finds your lack of faith disturbing!

For our first episode of 2019, we're talking about the oldest and perhaps most recognizable icon of the franchise: Darth Vader himself. A recent fan film, "Shards of the Past," came out during the holidays and has since brought in almost six million views. Its high production values and focus on action have many discussing the merits of this storytelling method. [Editorial Note: Pat was thinking of Star Wars Explained during the conversation, not the fan film’s actual channel, Star Wars Theory.]

Between this film, the novel "Thrawn: Alliances," and the second "Darth Vader" comic series from Marvel and writer Charles Soule, the original Dark Lord of the Sith has been going through a renaissance of sorts. Rarely has Vader been explored in such depth, and all of these recent developments have Chris & Pat seeing him in new light - especially after the comic series' epic Force-vision conclusion.

What did we think of the fan film? What questions are raised and answered in Darth Vader #25? How has our understanding and appreciation of Hollywood's most iconic villain changed recently?

Later, a fan question prompts us to discuss the prospects for Obi-Wan and Vader-focused projects. What kind of stories could be told about Master and Apprentice in the back half of their lives? In what form would we like to see these stories told?

As the year draws to a close, Chris & Patrick look back on the major events of 2018 in the galaxy far, far away, and look ahead to the absolute whirlwind that will be 2019! Bad business calls and schisms in the community have led the Disney era to lose momentum for the first time, but as we realized while running through the things that we know are coming next year, we expect the franchise will be right back up to speed in a few months.

Where did things go "wrong"? Will Star Wars be more successful on the small screen than in the theatre? What areas do we want the canon to explore? How can we as fans temper our expectations? And what does the future look like for Star Wars beyond the coming year?

While the Star Wars mothership has pulled out of hyperspace for the time being, 2018 was a huge year for our humble podcast and we hope 2019 will be bigger still.
