The Gloucester County Health Department says there are multiple presumed cases of bird flu in Canada Geese near Alcyon Lake.
That's in the Borough of Pitman, and officials say there are indications the virus is actively circulating in wildlife or domesticated birds around Gloucester County.
Officials say the general public health risk is low, but there is potential for human infection. People who work or associate with birds, poultry, or cows are at higher risk.
You should avoid direct contact with wild birds or other animals who may be infected.
Human symptoms of bird flu include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and — in severe cases — respiratory distress.
Officials advise keeping yourself and your pets away from sick or dead animals and their feces.
You should also wash your hands frequently, and cook all eggs, poultry, beef, and other animal products to the proper temperature.
You can report sick or dead domestic birds to your veterinarian and the New Jersey Department of Agriculture.
