"Have you ever been a double agent for Israel?" That's what Gov. Josh Shapiro said he was asked by the team vetting him to be Kamala Harris' running mate. When he said the question was offensive, their response was: "Well, we have to ask."
He writes in his forthcoming memoir that "said a lot" about some of the people around Vice President Harris.
The New York Times obtained a copy of his memoir, "Where We Keep The Light." It details a conversation during which Shapiro said Harris asked if he'd be willing to apologize for statements decrying what he saw as antisemitism on Penn's campus. He told the VP he would not.
Shapiro writes that he wondered whether these questions were being posed just to him, "the only Jewish guy in the running, or if everyone who had not held a federal office was being grilled about Israel in the same way."
In her own book, Harris wrote of her concern that Shapiro would "be unable to settle for a role as No. 2" in the White House.
