City Controller Christy Brady says Philadelphia is making progress on traffic safety but still has one of the highest fatality rates among big cities — more than New York, Boston or Chicago.

Brady said that in 2024, there were nine traffic deaths per 100,000 people, despite efforts to improve safety such as Vision Zero.

"We really need to do a better job of protecting people on bikes in the city. Vision Zero has an important mission, and it’s to have zero traffic deaths."

Brady noted this year’s capital budget includes $6 million for Vision Zero projects.

The situation at Philadelphia's open-intake animal shelter is dire. The kennels are full, and unfortunately, dogs are timestamped for euthanasia because of a lack of space and resources.
