MONDAY MUSICALS: ANNETTE

.

.

.

ANNETTE is one of the more challenging films I’ve seen in a while. It’s about a superstar celebrity tabloid couple (Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard) that have a child (wooden puppet) that is both more talented than either of them and is a haunting reminder of past misdeeds. This was a tough hang, but it has a unique ability to be indescribably enthralling as well as infuriating.

My sister and I started this experiment in June, trying to see as many musicals as possible and potentially changing my view of musicals in general. I don’t particularly enjoy musicals as movies, so this is an on-going experiment we invite you to join us on this adventure with our take on ANNETTE.

In an attempt to catch up on our “monthly” segment, we will be releasing an episode each Monday in the month of November.

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES

.

.

.

Tis the season to be thankful. I, for one, am thankful for the host of BackLot605 – Casey Kelderman. Casey joined me today to breakdown the ONLY classic Thanksgiving movie: PLANES, TRAINS and AUTOMOBILES. Casey had never seen it before so I was excited to get his thoughts on this undeniable classic.

.

.

.

Though it made be heresy; we decided to remake this classic and bring it into the modern age. We each came in with picks for who we would cast for the stars and director. IT WAS A BLAST!

This is a special episode. Haley and I rediscovered our deep-seeded love for Jimmy Buffett. ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE was an incredible musical, and maybe one that can only truly be appreciated by fans of the source material. This conversation was a treasure.

MONDAY MUSICALS: NEWSIES

.

.

.

NEWSIES is a 1992 Disney musical loosely based on the New York City Newsboy's Strike of 1899. This was a surprisingly well-made movie, very well-choreographed, and I thought the story lent itself to being a musical quite well. Most famously known for starring a young Batman to be: Christian Bale.

IN THE HEIGHTS was slated to be this summer's big musical hit, to bust open the doors and welcome us all back into the theaters... That didn't exactly happen.

Picture this: you’re a humble Icelandic sheep farming couple who desperately wants a child. One day one of your sheep births a half human/ half lamb hybrid. What do you do?

.

.

.

As many of you don’t know, Old Legs is actually a sheep farmer in real life. Needless to say, this film was circled on our calendars. Was it good or was it baaaaad? (sorry)

"This Fog" is a lyrical short film shot on the harbor islands of New Hampshire’s seacoast that attempts to capture our strange and lonely, sometimes terrifying, sometimes beautiful pandemic lives.

Director Jeff Stern sat down with me today to have a great conversation about his newest film and about how life has felt like we've all been in a bit of a fog these last couple years.

New student Max attends his first ever acting class. He soon discovers that the lines between class and cult begin to blur as he and his fellow students are subjected to the bizarre but brilliant methods of their eccentric teacher, Adam (David Krumholtz).

Co-Director of the new short film Classsat down with me today and we had an absolute blast. Class is dark, entrancing, specific, oddly funny, and so much more. What a great addition to the South Dakota Film Festival.
