While I understand where this question is coming from, we’ll talk about why ‘painless’ isn’t the goal. How much abuse should a lacrosse goalie actually be taking? What should be expected? What responsibility does the goalie have? What responsibility do the coaches have? And much more.

We had a rather heated discussion with a parent in a lacrosse ‘hotbed’ about how coaching in that hotbed limits lacrosse goalie potential.

The irony is that the first sign you are in a ‘hotbed’ is that you get offended about any criticism of your hotbed.

These discussions bore me to no end and yet they are exactly what limits lacrosse goalie potential in those areas. A further irony, when people in these areas think they produce the best lacrosse goalies when in fact, by looking at just a little bit of research, they don’t.

US Lacrosse missed a tremendous opportunity when they removed the shin guard rule from women’s lacrosse. And while some goalies are excited about the new rules, these are goalies who do NOT understand the use of equipment as a tool and are caught up in how things ‘look’ rather than how they could perform.

I got a great question from a lacrosse mom who doesn’t actually have a goalie. She has a daughter who plays defense!

Her question was, “What can my daughter do as a defender to help her goalie out on the field.

I’ve named this “The String Drill”. It’s hardly a new idea, but I swear by it for teaching ALL goalies about positioning.

We’ll talk about why this cheap piece of equipment is so valuable and should be used every day.

From young goalies all the way up to collegiate goalies and beyond, The String Drill is probably the most valuable piece of coaching you can implement.

Mental health is a hot-button topic that is being made cloudy by the media.
