LAFV Talks

Ahead of our live discussion panel on Wednesday 17 October at The Curtain Hotel, London we chop it up about Black British Excellence. Does it actually exist and if it does who the best examples of it are in UK music.

Featuring: s.dot.c, All Chest No Legs, BDT

What is ‘Black British Excellence’? Who’s a good example of it in the UK music scene? Why aren’t Wiley / Skepta heralded in the same way Diddy and Jay-Z are?

On this episode of LAFV talks the gang review J Cole’s 5th album, KOD.

J Cole is one of the most enigmatic rappers of his generation, his fifth studio album, ‘KOD’, goes a long to confirm this view. Feature-less throughout (ratings to those who have managed to figure out the kiLL edward double entendre) and with most production handled in house, Cole constantly takes swipes at contemporary flows, artists and trends. On our latest podcast episode, we’ve chopped up our views on the impact of the album and the video for ‘Kevin’s Heart’.

We also discuss the relevance of numbers in music (Album & single sales, RIAA certifications and tour income).

On this episode of LAFV Talks, the relevance of music videos.

Music videos have always had the ability to extend the life of a track and in some cases even outshine the song itself. With the slow decline in prominence of @mtvofficial , we’ve seen a departure from this trajectory with the ‘fast food consumption’ of media, in the form of streaming taking precedence.

In recent months, however, we have seen a resurgence in the emphasis placed by artists on the visual art form particularly in the cases of @lil-dicky – Freaky Friday, @migosatl – Walk It Talk It and Drake’s – God’s Plan. Have a listen for our thoughts on all three and the wider influence /relevance of music videos.
