    Great story!
I like how this book uses fiction to drive a point home, yet it includes enough non-fiction to make it easy to talk about exactly why Henry is so impatient. I used this book with students ranging in grades from K-2 to introduce the concept of patience. I worried it might be a little above the K's heads, but it wasn't at all, especially with a little acting out how the fish would be afraid of Henry if he were splashing around as the book describes. Students were easily able to make connections to times they have to be patient, and Henry's difficulties in being still really resonated with some students who identified with an excited, "That's like me!"

    Good book

    Length: 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-12-15
    Publisher: Arbordale Publishing
    Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7
    Publisher's Summary:
What if Jack and Jill had been playing on a nice soft sand dune instead of that treacherous hill? And suppose Mary's pet wasn't really a lamb. What if Mary had a little...clam? Those questions - and more - are gleefully answered in Mother Osprey: Nursery Rhymes for Buoys & Gulls. This collection retells Mother Goose rhymes and celebrates America's coastlines and waterways - from sea to shining sea. The "For Creative Minds" educational section includes: poem-related fun facts and a map activity.
    Members Reviews:
    Grammy loves reading this book.
If you love the sea, this book is a special treat. Familiar childrens' rhymes rewritten with a nautical touch. Illustrations will make you smile. I bought it as a gift for grandparent friends who are often out in their boat fishing or pulling lobster pots. I know it will add to their grand kids' library for their over night visits.
Mother Osprey: Nursery Rhymes for Buoys and Gulls
As the title of this book implies, with ingenuity and an obvious love of the sea, Ms. Nolan took some wonderful old standard nursery rhymes and wove them into sea and coastline themed poems. Within these rhymes, Ms. Nolan introduces bits of nautical history and information. Instead of Jack and Jill, it's Jack and June who go up a dune. Sing a Song of Sixpense includes a trawler crew, first mate, captain, and deckhand.
Ms. Nolan takes these old standards and makes them her own. Some of the rhymes go over very well, such as Sleep Baby Sleep, and Buoys and Gulls; others may leave a young child a little puzzled, such as Tweedle-Dum & Tweedle-Dee, and Two Skippers from Texas.
I love the concept of Mother Osprey, introducing sea lingo, history and information in a wonderfully illustrated rhyming book - much of it works. I do think that a couple of the rhymes include words and themes that are geared for an older reader. One rhyme in particular is One Flamingo. It is an amazingly intricate and informative rhyme, but verses such as: "First a goose, and then some geese--a gaggle in the lane. But if the geese are flying, the gaggle is a skein," I believe would lose many young readers of 3-7. Another is The Witch of November, 1913 with verses such as: "The lakes heaved and tossed--so many lives lost. Howling wind, high seas and snow. More than two hundred souls filled those sorrowful rolls--the crewmen of long ago." Again, this may be a wonderful piece, but not for the intended age group.
With colorful and realistic illustrations, Mother Osprey is, overall, an entertaining, fun and educational book that celebrates the sea and coastline. Phrases and words such as okra pods, Puget Sound, shark, pirate, and shoal of bass will peak children's interest. Although, I do feel the book would be better intended for ages seven through ten.
Mother Osprey also includes a "For Creative Minds" section that sheds insight and gives information on each rhyme. Also included is a two-page map of the United States and its surrounding waters highlighting the geographical areas the rhymes reference, along with a "Map Activity Questions" section.
About the author: Lucy Nolan is an award-winning author who spent many childhood days roaming two very special islands: Pawleys Island, SC, and Amelia Island, FL. Ms. Nolan is also the author of Down Girl and Sit chapter books.

Baby dogs are puppies, and they belong to a litter, but what is a baby skunk called, and what is the name of its family group? This clever, rhythmic story tells us just that! Counting from one to 10, familiar backyard animals are introduced by baby and family group name. Each stanza also tells a bit more about each animal by providing clues as to what they eat, how they sound, or where they live. The "For Creative Minds" section includes more animal fun facts, information on keeping a nature journal, and how to watch for wildlife in your own backyard.

Sweet Story & Wonderful Learning Tool
In My Backyard is a delightful story about baby animals that children might see when they look out the window. Author Valerie Giogas captures each young animal's sweet characteristics and uses rhyme to introduce them. But this isn't just a book about cute animals (which they are!) it's also a learning experience. Giogas expertly places the numbers 1 - 10 in the story. 1 fawn, 4 cubs, 5 bunnies, etc. She also uses a combination of easy words with some that are one step up. It's a chance for parents to introduce new words in a fun way. You'll also be impressed with the extras at the end of the story. Each baby is explained, for example "nymphs are baby grasshoppers." There are fun games to play and pictures of the signs animals leave when they've been there. (tracks, chewed pinecones, etc.) In addition a page of what to do if you find an injured animal. With those extras this is a book that your children will want to read again and again. They'll probably be inspired to go in your backyard looking for animal signs. Sylvan Dell made a great choice here. I'm looking forward to more of Giogas' work. And the illustrations by Katherine Zecca are wonderful.
    In My Backyard
    Five Stars
This is a terrific book. It's a counting book, a reference book, and a poem!
Oh dear, what a sweet story
Sylvan Dell Publishing brings In My Backyard to the lineup of great children's books released in 2007. Written by newcomer Valarie Giogas and illustrated by Katherine Zecca, this scientific adventure introduces children (and adults, admittedly) to the family names of a host of common animals found around rural and suburban homes.
The story uses a sing-song rhythm that typically delights the young reader with familiarity. It provides practice in basic counting skills from one to ten. This may be a book with a limited audience due to the strict scientific nature of the topic, but any child with an interest in animals and wildlife will find it fascinating. Akin to virtually all Sylvan Dell books, it is a teacher or home schooling parent's dream.
Also with all Sylvan Dell releases, the story is followed up by various activities and expanded teaching opportunities. In My Backyard includes a memory game that can be printed from the publisher's website, extra counting exercises, and helpful information regarding wildlife and caring for injured animals.
Katherine Zecca has written and illustrated various other animal-themed children's titles including River Song, A Puffin's Year, and Why Puppies Do That.
Armchair Interviews says: Another Sylvan Dell winner.
    Backyard Treasures
Children will have fun reading this book, probably not even realizing that at the same time they are learning about the animals they can see close by their homes. They will also have fun counting the baby animals.

    Not for rising 4th graders.
I used this book with summer kids for remedial teaching for kids struggling with the multiplication tables (3rd graders going into 4th grade next year.) I would have like it better if it had more text.
    great & informative book
I love how this book incorporates science into math. Great way to teach both science and math in one lesson.
    Have some fun while learning
Multiply On The Fly is a many faceted children's book. Beautifully illustrated with remarkably accurate drawings of insects by Erin Hunter, each page describes a feature of the insect on that two-page spread in well done rhyming prose. What is so interesting about this is that first of all it rhymes. Next it speaks to a specific characteristic of the insect. Then on most of the pages alliteration is utilized adding depth to the text. Lastly and as the main feature of the book, a multiplication "task" is presented.
This is very much for a young child's book. And it will behoove the adult to guide the child to grasp each of these tenets. I find that learning can be lots of fun. It doesn't have to be just academic, fact finding, instruction. Let's have some fun while we're doing it. That is what Multiply On The Fly does for you.
Some interesting "alliteration" in the rhyming prose....
    "Seven stealthy walking sticks"
    "Each eats eight spider mites."
    "Six sturdy soldier ants"
"How long is the luna line?"
I also love how the back of the book has a "Creative Minds" section. This includes pages on insects.... Insect Body Parts, Match the Insects, Insect Life Cycles, and Compare and Contrast. These are beautifully and and with remarkable accuracy done. A great learning and reference tool. Then don't forget this book is all about multiplication! There are a couple of pages recapping the story pages and the specific multiplication problems. And there is an Insect Multiplication Table. Just lots of good learning fun!
    cute and well-done
If you have five grasshoppers and each of them has two wings, how many wings are there total? Not only do insects themselves multiply but they can be used to help reinforce multiplication facts for children. Other insects featured in the book include fireflies, luna moths, dragonflies, ants, honeybees, ladybugs, walking sticks, monarch butterflies, and spittlebugs. Do you know what pirate bugs are and what they eat? And if each pirate bug eats eight of its prey, how many pests will be gone? As the author says, "Numbers are an important part of our world. You can find them in school, sports, and nature.

My 4 year old granddaughter found this at the library and it immediately became her favorite. I purchased at Christmas so that she would quit checking it out of the library every single month! Very well written, beautiful colorful pages. I only wish this author had more books to offer!
    excellent
My four year old has read this book about a million times, at her own request.
Not only that, but one of her favorite games now is to use her plastic octopus and other fish toys to imitate the story in the book. The animals all use different defenses to get away from the shark. She even came up with some of her own, like dolphin who "jumps out of the water."
She likes the build up of drama as the shark in the book gets closer and closer.
    Great!
My three year old loves this book. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is educational without being too scary in its description of predators.
    Octavia
This made for a great gift for the pre-schooler I love. I read about it and knew it would be just perfect.
Octavia And Her Purple Ink Cloud
This is a charming story about Octavia Octopus and her friends who live in a small, secret cave in a colorful coral reef. They often pass the time practicing "how to hide from a hungry creature."
Her friend Porcupine fish is able to puff up and turn himself into a big prickly ball. Octavia tells him she is able to squirt purple ink as a means of escape. She squirts a cloud to demonstrate this ability, but to her dismay it is yellow.
Sandy Seahorse amuses Octavia when he shows her how he can wrap his tail around part of a plant. He sways with the plant leaves and becomes almost invisible. Again trying to squirt her purple ink, it squirts out orange, she sighs and says, "I guess I'd better practice."
Freddy Flounder changes color and hides on the ocean floor. He has very strange, funny eyes and is able to see in many different directions. Again Octavia unsuccessfully tries to squirt purple ink but it squirts out green.
Greta Sea Turtle, Carolyn Clown Fish, and Polly Parrotfish all demonstrate their survival tactics. Octavia continues to practice to squirt purple ink but consequently she quirts red and blue. After much practice Octavia is finally successful squirting her allusive purple ink just as a very big, very hungry shark approaches. She and her friends are able to hide from the hungry shark and he swims away with an empty belly.
Children as well as parents will learn interesting facts about the unique octopus in the section "Octopus Fun Facts" in the back of the book.

    Great book for division lessons.
    The Great Divide
The pictures in this book are simply beautiful ! This book makes learning division both informative and fun for children.
    The Great "Divide"
If I was back at 8 years old I would love this book. As a kid I had a huge interest in nature and to have that coupled with division, it is the best thing in the word.
    ________
Premise: The premise of the books is mainly centered around division and teaching kinds how to divide through imagery and visualization. However it also teaches children about different animals that exist in nature and the names of the groups they live in(herds, flocks, etc). There is are extra activities in the back as well that I think children will enjoy and learn a lot from as well.
    ________
Art: The art is amazing here and all the animals are incredibly realistic and feel like they are about to pop off the page. The landscapes are beautiful as well and overall it was extremely detailed and nicely illustrated.
    ________
If you have a child that is learning how to divide and finds joy in animals then this is an excellent book to help them practice their division. It is a great book with a number of problems for practice.
    Captivating and educational
The Great Divide, by Suzanne Slade, is a clever little book full of lyrical rhymes and mathematical queries for young readers. While teaching children the names for groups of various types of animals, this picture-book challenges youngsters to figure out the answers to simple division problems.
Colorful and animated illustrations by Erin E. Hunter help set the stage for this captivating book which would make an excellent addition to any home or school library.
A fabulous array of online resources linked to this book include Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts! quizzes.
bone up on division while learning about nature
We've all heard about a pride of lions or a pack of wolves, but do you know what a group of gorillas is called? In a manner similar to her What's New at the Zoo? (addition), What's the Difference? (subtraction), and Multiply on the Fly (multiplication), author Suzanne Slade uses rhyming verse to introduce youngsters to division facts as they also learn about what bunches of different kinds of animals are called. For instance, if you have twenty tough gorillas, and they all march off in five directions, how many will be in each band?
The first couple of pages point out that many animals spend a lot of time with their families and friends and then identify the names for many collections of common animals, such as a skulk of foxes and a dray of squirrels. In the back, a collective nouns matching activity, a "Where in the World" quiz, and a couple of pages with further information about division "For Creative Minds," can all be found, and there are even more activities and quizzes for The Great Divide at the publisher's website.
