Title: A Pioneer Girl Learns to Cook
    Subtitle: Apple Pie & Biscuits
    Author: Amber Richards
    Narrator: Gina E. Manegio
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-16-14
    Publisher: Valerie Garner
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
This is an educational audiobook about the life of a pioneer girl, the process she had in learning to cook and other aspects of pioneer life. It's a realistic look at life, tools, and equipment used in pioneer days, obtaining food ingredients, and how they kept food safe with no refrigeration. My hope as an author was to help girls to connect with, and get a feel for life in early American history in an engaging way. Differences are highlighted between pioneer life and modern life today.

    Good begining book..
I like this...it may be too simple for some, but it can show about what the survival girls and women and their families had to endure. It is also a good beginning of the curiosity on how food was stored and cook. If one wants to go further, I would say this story is a good start.
Fantastic book of our settlement history
Growing up in the mountains of Kentucky I knew a lot of the âoldâ ways of life. Though I was lucky not have to experience it first hand, the stories/memories from my mother and other relatives are still fresh in my mind to this day. I was thrilled to see a book on the early settlements daily life (and even some rural life up to a few decades ago). In âA Pioneer Girl Learns to Cook: Apple Pie & Biscuitsâ Author Amber Richards paints a wonderful picture of womenâs role during this period. The book is perfect to share at Thanksgivingâor any time of year. The two recipes are a great bonus to get your child involved.
    We love it
This is the second book I purchased to read with my nice.. The pioneer girl was very inspirational for my niece. It gave her a much greater understanding of life back in the pioneering days.. we both enjoyed the book very much and found it very educational.. We both enjoyed doing the project at the end of the book very much..
    Very good book
Was an interesting read. I will have to try the recipes in here. Hope to pass this on to my children
    great information
I enjoyed the information gathered and as the previous review said, it is a good start into the topic. I also loved the recipes included! This book would be a great homeschool resource and activity.

This is an audiobook about the myths, fables, legends and scientific studies concerning the Loch Ness Monster, known as "Nessie", for children. It is for ages 7-12, and is a short chapter book, highlighting some of the earliest sightings, as well as more recent sightings. The myths, fables, and legends encourage imagination and invite children to add their own theories. This provides an opportunity to use critical thinking skills on a fascinating topic. Nessie sightings are presented as myths, and not proven fact.

    Great for kids
I'm really impressed with the book, it's perfect for kids due to it being a great blend of being educational but fun and entertaining at the same time. The material is quite comprehensive in a way, but the way that it is expressed if great for younger people because it's written in a way that is easy to understand and make sense of. There's also many pictures which act as a great visual aid to the material and make it easy to comprehend.
One major thing that surprised even me was how there have been numerous sighting of a Loch Ness similar creature in different parts of the world and in much further places than it's original sighting, such as Africa and even Japan and North Korea. Maybe we will never find out the whether the Loch Ness Monster is real or not, but either way it's still fun to speculate and it's definitely an intriguing concept for all ages
was much like reading a paper written by one of my students
I am a 7th grade writing teacher. Reading this book to my daughter, who is very interested in the Loch Ness Monster, was much like reading a paper written by one of my students. The amount of conventional errors was astounding! If this book was truly written by a 13 year old, I would commend him or her while commenting that he or she needs a better editor. However, if this was truly written by an adult, I cannot believe it was actually published. Does it have some cool information? Yes. However, it is both written and displayed in an amateur way. There are much better books out there for the same price and with the same information. Pick a different one.
The book I wanted when I was ten.
When I was a child I was engrossed with the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, but more Nessie. It just blew my mind that something, that was dinosaur-like was out-there swimming in this body of water. So I wanted to bring some of that curiosity to my niece and nephews. I brought this book with me and had them read it to me out loud on the Kindle and then we looked at google maps to see if we could find old Nessie. The book is written well and has a lot of solid information. It is a great book and the book I would have loved to read when I was ten years old.
    oh the mystery!
Great read with lots of fun information. Who doesn't love a good mystery and The Loch Ness Monster is one that has been around for a lot of years/ I liked how much information the author came up with about the loch ness monster, past to present. Great pictures add to this informative book for kids.
    A Fascinating Mystery!
This book is an interesting read for kids who love to read about legends and mysteries. The legend of the Loch Ness Monster has always intrigued people of all ages. The book covers all the expeditions in the lake over centuries and gives what facts and fictions have been discovered.

    Title: Your Special Gift
Subtitle: A Preteen Primer to the Facts of Life
    Author: Carol McCormick
    Narrator: Annalyn Hostert
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-14-13
    Publisher: Celestial Press
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Having "the talk" can sometimes be an awkward experience for both parent and child. Even so, I didn't want to wait until my children's hormones kicked in, and I didn't want to be caught off guard when they had questions, but most of all, I didn't want them growing up with misconceptions concerning sex. I wanted my children to be informed about the facts of life, yet without being too sexually explicit in the process, because some of the facts weren't good such as pornography, diseases, and predators, but these subjects needed to be addressed as well.
As a result, I told them what I have written in Your Special Gift, by using the analogy of a gift, a lock, and a key to define commonly used sexual terms, and to caution them about possible consequences, and to warn them of potential predators. I also told them what God says about this Special Gift, and I used Scripture to define true love.
The simplicity of the gift analogy opens the door of communication between parent and child in an effective, straightforward, and yet sensitive way, so that any question concerning sex can be answered by using this method.
Your Special Gift is a Christian-based guide that is a valuable reference.

    Too "sugary sweet" for me.
I purchased this book for my 12 year old son and I to read, and we laughed so hard, we both were in tears. I'm a diabetic, and felt it necessary to check my blood sugar after reading how-it was SO sickeningly sweet! It seems to be lost in a time warp, far more apropos to the 1950's, rather than 2012, when I purchased it. We are Christians, and that was one of the book's selling points. Now that I have read it, I couldn't give it away-that's how bad it is. As an RN, I've dealt with very intimate issues with strangers; I wouldn't subject any of them to this drivel.
I HIGHLY recommend "The Boy's Body Book." I'm sure there must be similar material for girls.
A good book for preteens about sex
A short book written mainly for girls about sex. Though I do not see any reason why boys could not read this as well as the point is just the same.
This book has some biblical quotes in it and is written with a religious undertone.
It uses an analogy of getting a gift to having sex--I think this was a great way to explain it especially to a younger audience, like this book is written for. It also does address the issue to a younger audience about what to do if someone is touching them inappropriately.
I almost wish they would have this as reading in schools for health class or sex ed. It is a short book, that is too the point. I think the analogy of a gift is something that most kids can relate to and understand.
    Great Resource
I downloaded this book unto my Kindle and showed it to one of our teachers who teaches Sex Ed. She immediately asked me to buy copies for not only her own family, but for the library also.
It is simple, yet packs such a powerful message for all pre-teens who may have questions that they don't feel comfortable asking their parents about.
It also warns them of what to beware of when dealing with males and even touches on the dangers of the Internet and pornography.
A great resource for schools and families.
    Your special gift
This is a great book for ALL ages. It teaches preteens about how special they are and I think it can make a teenager think twice about decisions that they have made.

    Title: Puzzle of the Platypus
Subtitle: And Other Explorations of Science in Action
    Author: Jack Myers
    Narrator: Ken Marks
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-05-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
When the platypus was first discovered by Europeans in the 1800s, it was well-known by Australian Aborigines - but no one knew how to classify it. It lived in the water and laid eggs like a reptile, had a bill like a bird, and was furry and warm-blooded like a mammal. Scientists had to come up with a way to solve this and many other mysteries of nature. Alaskan Polar bears sleeping in hidden underground dens caused problems for researchers wanting to drill for oil without disturbing the bears. Find out how scientists used infrared imaging to see the caves beneath the snow. One type of parrot from southern Peru munches on dirt from a riverbank each morning. Learn how these birds (and some people) use dirt as part of their diet. And also learn how a special kind of bird in Africa actually leads villagers to one of the town's main food sources, honey.
This collection of articles by Jack Myers, long-time chief science editor for Highlights for Children magazine, answers some of the most interesting questions science has explored.

    A Gift for the Grandchildren
Great illustrations. Can't comment on story line, as we shipped it off to the West Coast for an Xmas gift for the grandchildren.
    Simple and very entertaining
This book is a compilation of eleven animal "mysteries." The short stories were originally part of the "Science in Action" articles in Hightlights for Children magazine and are now included in one of several books in the Science in Action series. The book includes topics such as how dolphins communicate, how crows have been observed creating tools, and how people have long pondered the question of whether a platypus is a bird, mammal, or reptile. Each section is only a few pages long and gives the reader a simple background of the topic. I really enjoyed this book, and learned a lot more than I expected. It is a quick read and keeps the reader engaged by the switching of topics. The contrasting cartoon and realistic illustrations are also very enjoyable. This book is a great homage to Jack Myers.

    Five Stars
    Good.
    Fun & Quick Read
This is the first book of Gary Paulsen's "World of Adventure" series. The story is well thought out and the action comes quick in this series debut. I am 22 yrs old and read this book series back when I was younger. I just recently bought the entire series and have started reading them chronologically. Well worth the price tag which isn't much to begin with. Perfect series to get kids interested in reading if you're a parent searching for something to catch your child's interest. A+ Recommend!
    A Fun Read
This is a fun action packed story. My students and I get really interested in the World of Adventure series. This story, along with the narration kept my students interested. A great, fun read.
Perfect for the "Wannabe" Young Adventurer
While exploring some caverns, Will and Sarah find a treasure but also a threat. They may not get out of those caverns alive!
Paulsen begins this book with Will pretending to be the young brave about whom the caverns have a famous legend. Paulsen breaks away from the fantasy to reality, starting the plot of this story. This is sure to suck in those young readers, helping them to imagine adventures they would like to have!
Like all of Paulsen books, this one is sure to appeal to the young with a thirst for adventure. His characters always ring true, as they lead the young reader on an adventure that children only dream about. His settings are always vivid, making the adventure even more exciting. His writing is so smooth and effortless, even the young reader will forget she is reading. Every young adventurer will love this book!
    Great adventure story
I liked this book. It's in the same vein as old teen series books, like Three Investigators or Hardy Boys.
Two criminals rob a bank, and a few days later, two kids are exploring the caves in a nearby mountain. Will is a Native American, who's been told tales of the caves by his grandfather, and he's brought along his friend Sarah. These caves are where Chief Red Horse supposedly left some treasure.
They find a treasure chest almost immediately, but unfortunately, it belongs to the bank robbers, who tie up the kids. The bulk of the story is an ongoing cycle of the kids escaping, hurting the criminals, exploring the caves a little more, and getting recaptured. The resolution is interesting and exciting.
It's a really entertaining adventure story.

    Otis Is the Best
grandson, Otis, loves these books which carry a wonderful message, are beautifully illustrated and great oversized size.
    Beautiful and Classic
Loren Long has a gift for telling sweet, timeless stories. His books feel like tales that I grew up with, and my parents grew up with, and probably my grandparents grew up with. My son enjoys them now, and I'm sure he will enjoy reading them to his children. Writing stories like that takes skill, talent and a particular gift.
Before writing this review, I went back to read what I wrote for my review of the first Otis book. This was my first sentence: This is one of the books that I bought solely because I love, love, LOVE the artwork. That is mostly true of Otis and the Puppy, except now I knew that I would be getting a lovely story to go with the sumptuous and absolutely perfect illustrations.
    Five Stars
Otis- reliably clean, kind, and kid friendly. We are steadily working to buy them all.
    Cute Book
This book, like all the Otis books, is cute. My kids like it. I doesn't have a moral, or anything. It's just fun and has nice illustrations.
    Five Stars
